Hi pals, #ExtinctionRebellion are NOT protesting about individual consumer behaviour, so however satisfying it feels to point out they prob drive cars/their superglue is prob not vegan/weed lamps are prob CO2 intense etc etc, it’s not actually relevant to their objective. THREAD
#ExtinctionRebellion are protesting GOVERNMENT inaction on climate change. Carping at personal habits has been the RW tactic against environmentalists for OVER 30 YEARS
Enviro/ist: global warming will kill us
RW: ahh! but your Citroën 2CV runs on PETROL so your point is INVALID!
And jeez, it's been successful! we've SO bought into the narrative that it's CONSUMERS that COULD fix the problem, as described in @Martin_Lukacs brilliantly on point 2017 article “Neoliberalism has conned us into fighting climate change as individuals” gu.com/p/6p7j6/stw
The solutions presented to us are ALWAYS to SPEND - spend MORE on lightbulbs, eco-detergents, on travelling by train, on cars that run on houmous (probably) - you can BUY eco-smugness! so of course "environmentalism" becomes synonymous w white middle class whimsy and hypocrisy
Ppl on low income CAN'T make these kinds of consumer choices (and less likely to travel full stop) and still have a FRACTION of the carbon footprint of those w disposable income- so we all start feeling like "well what's the point in any of it" and pals... this is not an accident
As @NaomiAKlein observes in This Changes Everything, the timing of the consensus on climate change (30 YEARS AGO) was V BAD - when as we should have been revising our production methods and economic reliance on fossil fuels, the floodgates of free market capitalism were opening:
This shift was prioritised over ALL climate action, and the warnings of scientists were further drowned out by fossil fuel giants deliberately undermining public belief in climate change whilst quietly raising their own oil platforms to adapt to the predicted rising sea levels

A LOT of time + money has been spent on making sure that environmental issues are ridiculed and ignored - because as @NaomiAKlein says, the right have known ALL ALONG that it'll to take a LOT MORE than a few incremental tweaks to limit the devastating impact of climate change
Last years UN suggestion that we have 12 years to limit the worst effects of climate change (ipcc.ch/sr15/) is a BEST CASE SCENARIO. Our governments have had... and forgive me if I'm repeating myself here...THIRTY YEARS to implement meaningful carbon related legislation
So... this time honoured "gotcha" reaction any time anyone campaigns for the environment whilst simultaneously having a car/flight history/non-biodegradable bong has to be one of the most successful derailing strategies of all time but honestly pals, WE HAVEN'T GOT TIME FOR THIS
PS plz don't "but China..." and "...but Europes emissions have reduced!" me. Europes emissions didn't reduce they just moved - when our industry did - to China.
