Just a quick #ableg rant: Danielle Smith is a right-wing radio host who recently had to apologize to her listeners for interviewing Caylan Ford for 45 minutes, but failing to press her on the white supremacist comments she made that led to her being dropped as a UCP candidate.
Today, Smith is in the Journal talking about Vivian Krause — a blogger who for a decade has pushed a bizarre conspiracy theory positing that the Rockefellers and other foreign billionaires are responsible for keeping Alberta’s oil land-locked. edmontonjournal.com/opinion/column…
These billionaires, so the theory goes, fund groups like the David Suzuki Foundation and Leadnow to run campaigns to undermine the construction of pipelines in Canada, so that the Alberta resources must be sold to the US and not overseas.
In the Journal op-ed, Smith enthusiastically endorses Jason Kenney’s plan to go after Canada’s environmental groups and charities, through legal audits etc, to end “foreign political influence.”
This is ridiculous. Anyone who has had even minimal contact with the environmental groups Krause targets can easily comprehend that their agenda is not set by shadowy American billionaires, but Canadians who don’t think that our leaders are doing enough to address climate change.
I worked for Leadnow in 2015. The group’s funding model is transparent, and is open about the fact that 10% of its funding comes from grants and major donations. The rest comes from individual donations. leadnow.ca/faq/
Leadnow is effective not because it’s enacting and agenda set by the Rockefellers, but because it’s able to use its minimal resources and a scrappy staff to recruit large numbers of volunteers and supporters to facilitate their myriad campaigns.
Krause’s theories have been debunked in various places (links at end of thread), and many have pointed out ironic fact that much of her work is funded by oil and gas companies that pay her in the form of speaking fees and honorarium. (Hundreds of thousands of $$s)
She’s also expressed views that express doubt about climate change and climate science. Apparently, Mike Duffy was a big fan and wanted to bring her onto the national stage.
Vancouver writer @Garossino was debunking Krause’s “supposed scandal” as far back as 2012, sources, arguing that “almost none of the key facts holds up to scrutiny.” huffingtonpost.ca/sandy-garossin…
@Garossino Canadians are free to disagree with the goals and ideals of environmental groups, and they are free to dispute their tactics or rhetoric or whatever. But Kenney & Smith are playing a dangerous game by painting them as foreign-funded agents and elevating absurd conspiracy theories
@Garossino The UCP knows it still its still an uphill battle to get its pipeline, and now that the NDP are out of power, Kenney and Smith are looking for new enemies with which to whip up anger and resentment as the federal election approaches.
