“'Trans kids'? That’s CHILD ABUSE!”

A thread on why it’s not actually child abuse, written by the actual mom of a trans kid.
What's the definition "abuse"? Let's look.

Abuse: Noun. Cruel and violent treatment of a person or animal.

Let’s compare definition in relation to affirming a trans child.
First, there’s now no doubt, scientifically speaking, that trans kids exist. Their identities are supported by much credible, peer-reviewed research. To deny their existence is a lot like denying climate change. The evidence is there, but some people choose to ignore it.
Affirming trans kids means 3 things.

SOCIAL: Any age. Using different pronouns, maybe a different name & allowing them to dress/live as their true gender.

LEGAL: Changes to ID, etc. Age varies.

MEDICAL: Happens at puberty and beyond. Hormone blockers, hormones therapy, etc
Social transition might happen when a child is younger. That child is often followed by a professional specializing in gender issues. It’s child-lead and parent-supported. Nothing is forced on the child.

It is not cruel or violent and does not fit the definition of abuse.
Legal affirmation, like changing a child’s or youth’s ID so they can be validated for who they are, and go through society without being outed as trans and possibly face discrimination, is not forced either.

It is not cruel or violent to change ID and is therefore not abuse.
Medical transition, like all medical care, is done under the supervision of specialists. Youth jump many hurdles to get treatment, are very involved, and monitored for risk factors throughout.

It is not cruel or violent to receive proper medical care and is therefore not abuse.
The affirming model of care for trans kids has been proven the safest and most effective way to support them. It vastly reduces rates of distress, depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide, and is used all over the world.

It is, quite literally, the furthest thing from abuse.
But not listening to your child when they tell you something important? Refusing to support them? Forcing ideas we have about them on them for years until they’re old enough to transition independently – if they even make it that long?

THAT is cruel and violent.
