As @ewarren releases her plan to make public college free, cancel debt, cancel federal dollars going to for-profits, and invest big in HBCUs, I’m reminded of where the assault on Higher Ed as a public good began: California, with Ronald Reagan.

As @rortybomb & @zunguzungu wrote for @dissent, the Reagan Revolution made us forget that “the United States was building public schools & universities for a lot longer than it has been letting them crumble.”

It’s long past time we invest in them again
dissentmagazine.org/article/from-m…
& As Dr. @tressiemcphd wrote, also for @DissentMag, pushing for free public college is helpful because it “reintroduces the concept of public good to higher education discourse”

dissentmagazine.org/article/tressi…
As a coincidence, I happen to be in California today—which thanks to Reagan is the origin in many ways of the DEATH of education as a public good, to add my voice to the call to pass #AB376, a bill to establish a Borrower bill of rights for California.

californiaborrowers.org/borrower-bill-…
I’m so inspired by @ewarren’s multi-pronged approach to make education a public good again:
1. Free public college
2. $50 billion investment in HBCUs
3. Ending government loan money flowing to for-profit colleges
4. Debt cancellation for 95% of borrowers

It feels like a new day
And as debt cancellation FINALLY makes it into the mainstream discourse, let’s not forget that NONE of this happens without the work, agitation, and pushing of the envelope that the hero organizers at @0debtzone & @StrikeDebt
As @AnnLarsonNYC, one of the most badass organizers I’ve ever been blessed to know points out, look how far the free college and debt cancellation discourse has shifted. Organizing and agitation—it works!
