Thread: I want to talk for a minute about governance, because @brazilcham is a nonprofit under IRS code section 501(c)(6) [business leagues, chambers of commerce, etc.] Generally, these nonprofit chambers of commerce lean very conservative, but due to having tax exempt status /1
they must maintain something of a "non-partisan" veneer. That said, business generally tries to play nice & ingratiate itself to whoever is in political power. But going to the length of puffing up @jairbolsonaro as their "Person of the Year" is simply a bridge too far. /2
As a nonprofit, these annual galas always comprise a giant chunk of their annual earned revenue; it's part of how they survive. So public pressure really puts the squeeze on them in very stark dollar terms, which is all they really care about & the only way to push for change. /3
Just a quick look at their 990s tells the story. Observe @brazilcham's 2016 & 2015 filings (most current available). Look at the "Events & Seminars" line, which is where they'd show gala revenue. It's not broken out, but there's no doubt it constitutes most of that figure. /4
In FY2016 that's a whopping *76%* of their program revenue. In FY15 that's almost *79%*. This is hitting them where it hurts.
Furthermore, these galas are majorly expensive to put on. Think about how much it costs to rent @AMNH, @Cipriani, or @MHMarquisNYC. /5
Add to that catering & rental expenses, serving staff, valets, entertainment, advertising & PR, printing of invitations, mailers, etc. Some of this will be given in-kind (either whole or in part). But they already lost @FinancialTimes (thank you!) as one of the media partners. /6
Here's where I get to event sponsorships, as detailed in an earlier thread. Many are leveraged thru the companies their Board of Trustees own/run. It can make it a bit more difficult to peel off some of these sponsors, but let's try. As above, Financial Times already did. /7
Please follow along as I go thru @brazilcham's Board of Directors. These decisions are made w/ business strategy in mind, but it must be stressed that they are putting $/R$ over the safety & rights of LGBTQ folks, indigenous people, & environmental health, among other things. /8
It's hard to get away from the perception that this is pay-to-play WRT doing business in Brazil & vice-versa. I'm not naive & I know this is how things are. But, they're making a choice & choosing to participate in whitewashing #Bolsonaro. /9
You don't honor someone just because they are the head of state at that point in time & you do (or wanymt to) business in that country. Look at the whole picture of what they've said & done. That criteria disqualifies Bolsonaro (or SHOULD) from being a credible honoree. /10
Without further ado, here are the Board members of @brazilcham who deserve to face scrutiny & feel the heat for this decision to honor Bolsonaro. They are the ones who are legally, fiduciarily on the hook for what the Chamber does. They bear responsibility. /11
Alexandre Bettamio of @BofAML was named Board Chair of @brazilcham in 2017. Late in the campaign last year he was rumored to be Bolsonaro's pick for @BancodoBrasil CEO. /12

That does it for the Board. There is an Advisory Council with other business & political "luminaries" (haha) like @FHC, José Sarney, & @jdoriajr which you can view for yourself here. /24…
So here's another thing about being on a board like this. All of those people (or their companies) are on the hook for purchasing a table at the gala, meaning a contribution upwards of tens-of-thousands of $, or more for the event. /25
Or, if your company is donating in-kind goods/services--like a media partner, for example (ahem, @forbes)--for the event that might cover part or all of your contribution. In any case, all of these trustees have a role to play & some power to exert over this gala. /26
There's still time for them to use their power individually & collectively to get @brazilcham to revoke Bolsonaro's invitation. I hope that they do. /END
Addendum: It's not like I have enough money for a lot of these companies to care much about me. I'm not an investor. But I am a conscientious consumer. I have bought airfare many times through BACC Travel, @JOAODEMATOSNYC. I've eaten at @fogorestaurants in Philly. /1
I've been a loyal @AmericanAir Aadvantage member. And I will reconsider that if the affiliated board members from @brazilcham do not exert their power of oversight & governance to revoke the honor for Jair Bolsonaro. And, I don't just mean some cowardly way out... /2
like giving him the award in absentia because you are afraid of demonstrators. You must revoke the decision to present him with your "Person of the Year" Award. Nothing short of that will be satisfactory. /END #CancelBolsonaro #shameonmarriott #nobolsonaroinnyc
