Psychiatry research. Another freshly researched paper has landed. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
I have highlighted some of the outdated language, stereotypes, misunderstandings and myths in the invented-stories about the autistic characters. Deeply unhelpful.
Also not helpful to have the paper entitled 'mental health literacy'. Autism is not a mental health condition. See recent work on this.
For 'irritable', read 'often in pain or distress, which people think is a poor attitude'.
may be helpful for those wanting a steer on whether autism is a mental health condition. No, it really isn't.
For those wishing to have a starting point on why mythical 'functioning labels' e.g. high/low, or severe/mild are meaningless & harmful, learningdisabilitytoday.co.uk/why-highlow-fu…. Each autistic person is an individual, with their own profile of particular strengths, areas needing support, etc.
And those wishing to get to grips with the subject of autism and friendship, may I recommend as new and groundbreaking research (well, autistic people have known this for years...). Autistic people get on well with other autistic people, generally.
Meantime, the endless assumptions about 'computers and trains' are more a product of fantasy on the part of researchers than reality, ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29427546 may be helpful. A vast array of hobbies and interests. 400+ autistic adults.
There are 7 interests more popular amongst the autistic females than computers. Autistic people are likely to be friendly, outgoing artists (but who speak a different social language & need structure & routine). Teaching Psychiatrists to look for computer geeks is problematic.
Areas as popular or more popular than computing, for autistic females - nature, gardens, art, culture, religion/meditation, movies, celebrities, psychology, animals, arts, crafts.
And they still get diagnosticians asking them about computers, trains or engineering layouts....
