I actually think this has a long history with roots in the anti-Zionist propaganda of the Soviet Union, which was pushed extensively throughout the global Left beginning in the 60s. Here are a few examples:
There was a concerted effort to associate Zionists with Nazism. In this Soviet cartoon, Jewish Israeli leader Moshe Dayan tells Hitler to "move on!" as he claims the mantle of Nazism.
"Zionism is racism."
This one is self-explanatory.
On the left, the chain link spells out "Israel" on the right "South Africa".

Zionism was anything that represented Jewish particularism and became to be used by the Soviets as a stand-in for Jews. Speaking Hebrew was "subversive Zionist activity." Anti-Zionist tracts and cartoons often depicted Jews with stereotypical antisemitic caricatures.
In other words, just as we see today, there was a fluidity between the categories of Jew and Zionist that made any distinctions irrelevant.
The campaign lasted for decades reaching across the Middle East and the political Left around the world. The associations between Jews/Zionists and Nazis and other White Supremacists stuck and is today being weaponized again against Jews.
It is a particularly nasty and pernicious trope, equating Jews with their murderers and tormentors. There's little out there more base than that.
