Unfounded moralistic claims like these are so absurd--first of all, as a fact, the world produces more "vital goods & services" than are needed by several factors, it just restricts their access. second, cinema is incredibly labor intensive & has a high capital turnover rate.
Depending on the way you count it, Hollywood is between 2.4-4% of LA's economy, its multiplier is incredibly high bc it's labor intensive, so all else being equal between that & secondary services, it's probably more than 3x that.
CA accounts for something like a 6th of US GDP, & LA accounts for 27% of that, never mind that what isn't stated here is how absurdly much of film profits go into non-profits like universities, hospitals & museums, these secondary services plus tourism account for ~40% of LA GDP
When the effect on retail, services, transportation etc is included, we're talking roughly 66%--which is to say, given the size of the Federal, State & Local gov't, literally most of its GDP, either directly, indirectly, secondarily, or thru spillover fx, catalyst, & focal pt.
Since I take useful goods & services in their minds includes food, healthcare, clothing, & education (personally I'd say leisure is important too, but I doubt this Stakhanovite does), then their claim is utterly & totally false, no matter how you cut it.
Movies (as well as music, publishing, theater, arts in general, animation etc) do entail some capital accumulation & infrastructure, as well as spillovers into R&D & other things like the arts, STEM, other services etc. But mostly, like tourism, they're a form of distribution
The source of these high budget films, etc., aside from competition from others, stems from the incredibly high price & low revenues of theaters etc., BUT mostly it stems from IP, branding, licensing, marketing, and gov't tax breaks/subsidies.
In other words, the wasteful aspects of filmmaking are entirely the result of state policies, which makes the extent that it does redistribute & spillover into the rest of the economy *more* exceptional, not less.
What's more, filmmaking, music, the arts, TV, theater, museums, etc., are among the least throughput intensive of production & distribution--certainly less throughput intensive than agriculture, mining, shipping, transportation, construction & manufactures.
So if you think an industry which doesn't destroy the Earth like other ones, doesn't result in over-production, spreads around capital & income (especially to labor), & thru spillover fx & secondary ones supports entire networks of healthcare, education & nonprofits, I mean...
Not to mention that people actually DO FUCKING LIKE MOVIES AND THEY DO MAKE THEM HAPPIER, AND NOT ONLY THAT DIPSHIT, EXPERIENTIAL GOODS LIKE MOVIES RESULT IN HIGHER HAPPINESS/SATISFACTION THAN CONSUMPTION AT SATIATION LET ALONE POSSESSION OF GOODS.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH
IF YOU DON'T CONSIDER LEISURE, ENJOYMENT, SOCIALIZATION, STRESS RELIEF, SOCIAL GOODS & EXPERIENTIAL GOODS PART OF HUMAN NECESSITIES YOU'RE A. A PROTESTANT MORALIST & B. FLATLY WRONG ACCORDING TO MOST RESEARCH WE HAVE.
OP's take was so nuclear & galaxy brained bullshit, I was forced to defend fucking *Hollywood* of all places--which is not something I'd ever thought I'd do, nor do I care to do so again.
