lol criticizing aestheticism & sentimentalism always loses me followers on net
The fact remains that focussing on things like Hollywood Blockbusters is a total mis-direct, and, very clearly masks opinions of taste masquerading as political.
1. Media is labor intensive and highly redistributive, esp when secondary & spillover fx are included
2. Movies, including pulp, clearly do bring people happiness
3. Almost all the shitty aspect of Hollywood are the result of state policy
3a. For example, IP, branding, licensing, incorporation, tax breaks, subsidies, commercial airwave laws on the supply side
3b. Policies which raise the cost of service provision on demand side (zoning, land policy etc)
3c. The sustaining of marketing, enclosure & primitive accum.
3d. As such, one merely needs to remove the above, and current incarnations of Hollywood Blockbusters go away on their own (tho I doubt, if given the ability, mass spectacle based entertainment will ever go away!)
4. The resources allocated to the movie business is actually quite small comparatively (making its net fx more interesting)
5. Movies, like other arts, are relatively low throughput compared to basically most services & industries
6. The world overproduces basically every necessary or even convenient primary, intermediate, consumer, public & necessary goods & services
7. The problem IS distribution, but not logistically or physically, but socially bc of enforced scarcity
8. Since, if we want our planet to survive, we need LESS work (indeed its abolition), LESS production & LESS throughput, redirecting (the somewhat inconsequential) resources to high throughput standard work & labor is effectively myopic & suicidal
9. We could reduce labor & toil & abolish work as an institution, vastly scale back production, eliminate destructive activities, and only use recycled waste until it runs out, and we could provably provide for everyone in the world at much lower socio-ecological cost
10. And to close it, bc bad faith is what twitter excels at, NO, I'm not saying 'Hollywood is good actually', nor am I particularly a fan of superhero movies, I just find dressing up personal aesthetic sentiments & moralism as political opinion is dishonest & counterproductive
what's more, while I'd never make a nuclear style take u'd find in the Atlantic or smth that'd be like 'Hollywood is gonna save the planet' or w/e, the fact is, given overproduction, forced scarcity & the nature of work, expenditure on entertainment is BETTER than the alternative
But, of course, all of the labor hours spent making Endgame could be used to bang on hot steel in overalls, or construct massive ruin value monuments to socialism in the socialist realist style, so clearly it's bad & a waste.
