This is really a first-rate article by ⁦@john_sipher⁩. The only flaw is the political presumption that the Russians preserved the virginity of Hillary’s political network, when OSINT evidence indicates that that’s far from the case. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
@john_sipher 1) I've read this article three times, and have some second thoughts. It treats the 2016 elections as an anomaly, ignoring the fact that Moscow interfered in almost all our presidential elections since 1924. It shows no interest in this pattern.
@john_sipher 2) Sipher: "Russia could have pulled off its [2016] election-interference effort without the support of spies burrowed into U.S. society or institutions." This is vital. Moscow in decades BEFORE 2016. Yet the national security establishment has a poor record of rooting them out.
@john_sipher 3) While Sipher states or implies a far-reaching problem of Russian agents burrowed into America's institutions, he shows blindness to the certainty that the #KGB penetrated & manipulated liberal US politicians and institutions. Hillary Clinton and her networks are off the hook.
@john_sipher 4) This is where Sipher, a 28-year CIA officer who worked operations against Moscow, falls short in his article. Most of the piece reads like a professional intelligence assessment. But the political blindness reduces it to a partisan polemic, part of an orchestrated narrative.
@john_sipher Correction: "Moscow burrowed agents into US society decades BEFORE 2016. . . ."
