salon.com/2019/05/06/are… Once again the NY Times is treating it as an article of faith that to be “electable”, a Democratic candidate needs to be a centrist like Biden.

There is absolutely no evidence of this. And plenty of evidence to the contrary.
The idea that what voters want is someone who is economically to the right of Democrats is completely backwards. Among both Democratic *and* Republican voters, Americans tend to lean left economically.
I don’t think Democrats can chip off Trump voters. But if they were able to do so, the only way would be to overcome their racism with a strong economic message. Which is how Obama won in ’08: A small number of populists voted economic concerns over racism.
The good news is the strategy most likely to help turn out the Democratic base to vote is also the one that could get any swing voters that are up for grabs: Run a strong economic populist message and an inspiring candidate that makes people feel caught up in the moment.
