salon.com/2019/05/07/gam… It’s become a common complaint, verging now on an article of faith, that #GameofThrones has failed Tyrion, made him “incompetent” and that this is supposedly bad writing.

This opinion is wrong. Tyrion is as brilliant as he was in the earlier seasons.
Tyrion is not and has never been Captain Picard, an unfailing competence machine. He’s very good as peacetime ruler, but when it comes to war games, he’s never had the stomach for it. This storyline goes all the way back to season 2, and nothing new about it.
Tyrion’s characterization has been incredibly consistent. He’s an excellent bureaucrat, good at governance. But he’s absolute shit at conquest. Unfortunately, he’s in a world where everyone is at war and his particular skill set is not valuable. But it doesn’t mean he’s an idiot.
I don’t begrudge anyone their power fantasies or competence porn. I love watching T’Challa or Picard just win at life at every turn. But #GameofThrones is telling a different, dare I say, more literary story. It’s a story about human fallibility, not a power fantasy.
I'll add that Tyrion continues to have a lot of good ideas. But no one listens to him. His story is a tragic one. Watch it with that view and I suspect it'll make a lot more sense. salon.com/2019/05/07/gam…
