Since a number of people have asked, here's what happened today. Mentally ill upstairs neighbour spent the whole night banging and shouting and raging. He's always worse when I'm here; envious of me and bf. Goes absolutely NUTS if any noise could possibly be from erotic activity.
As you can imagine, the potential for his over-interpreting pretty much ANY noise as being boys bonking is rather large. Bf didn't sleep well, I took until 5am to go to zzzs. Both woke up late, around noon. (I don't work productively if under-slept; alarm clocks aren't my habit.)
Early afternoon he was swearing loudly, coming out onto the staircase area (there are 5 studio apartments with a shared kitchen/laundry area). We recorded some of the crazy noise as evidence—then I decided to go to local library to work. I needed somewhere quieter to concentrate.
I picked up the garbage on my way out, and as I opened the main door he appeared at the top of the staircase, shouting rudely at me. I was firmly impolite in my response. This tipped him into an uncontrolled rage. He (half-naked) chased me out of the house and into the street.
He grabbed my arm (that's technically assault), and I wrenched myself free and ran away. I am wise enough to know NOT to fight back; no point in risking injury or prosecution myself. He's clearly mentally unwell, so it's not personal. Just get to safety and stay away from him.
As he went back indoors, I grabbed a quick photo of him in the street as evidence, and he saw me do it. He knew immediately he was in trouble, I suspect, having crossed a legal line. I was a bit shaken, so walked down the street and called bf to warn him (I don't have door keys).
To ensure I had more contemporaneous evidence I recorded a two minute audio note of what had happened. Kept calling and texting bf - no reply. Getting worried, as I don't know if he is safe, or just in bathroom, or whatever. Then I get a call from him — is injured and bleeding.
I tell bf to call police and head back. Am very relieved that door is open and bf there, gash to his abdomen. Mr Mad is upstairs in his room, ranting. A few minutes later and police arrive. They call in reinforcements, as they don't know if he is going to be violent on arrest.
The wound to bf was caused by Mr Mad grabbing roof tiles and starting to throw them at my bf (out in garden tending to his plants, hence not answering my calls) from the upstairs window. First one missed and smashed, second one hit him in the side and caused injury.
There's a system in the UK where those with mental health problems are registered to avoid them being endlessly picked up by police system for what are health issues that cannot be prosecuted. But that isn't a ticket to commit violent acts. He'll now be detained in a secure unit.
It took a few hours for police to persuade him to voluntarily go to hospital, rather than arrest him. He needs treatment and rehousing; prison isn't going to serve anyone. Bf has temporary wound seal from attending paramedics and will get stitches done once evening A&E rush over.
Mr Mad has been playing these mind games for a long time, but always stopped just short of seriously breaking the law, keeping his disturbances to unpredictable bursts that make it hard to gather evidence. Now he's lost the game, so won't be allowed to play it again here. Relief.
So that was my day. Didn't get any work done — and I have LOADS to do — but have been for a walk in the local park to calm down and take some photos as my art therapy during stressful times. How was your day?
