MCU, THREAD I 1) OK, just watched the latest Spider-Man: Far from Home trailer, and...it’s time...I think to truly understand and appreciate the scope of what the MCU just completed with Avengers: Endgame, it’s important to leave the fantasy world for a bit and stay in real life.
2) 1999, Marvel’s stock price was .50. That’s fifty cents. They had been reeling from the 1995 $150m purchase of SkyBox to expand its space in the trading card market. They filed for bankruptcy the next year and laid off a third of their employees
3) They sold FF, X-Men and Spider-Man. As a diehard Make Mine Marvel guy since the early 1970s, Iron Man was a frontline Avenger, but his own comic never moved me. His greatest villains, Modok, The Mandarin, were meh. #Endgame was a bouquet to Robert Downey, Jr. cuz he saved them
4) The comic book market was flooded. Expanding in trading cards during the digital boom was killing them. The FF, X-Men and Spider-Man were gone. For Marvel to make a comeback like this is like the Warriors winning a title without Steph, Klay and KD
5) At the end of Endgame, Peter says to Tony, “You brought us back,” an obvious thank you to Downey Jr. reviving the MCU and doing it when the Batman franchise was dominant, and while Marvel Studios was negotiating to get its properties back.
6) Pepper then looks at Tony and says, “You can rest now, another nod to the fact that Iron Man did his job. Marvel, all the way back from bankruptcy, now has Spider-Man back. And it appears the X-Men, too, with Dark Phoenix later this month.
7) With a superstar in Tom Holland, Spider-Man is now ready to resume his rightful place as the anchor of the MCU. Tony’s death scene was a triumph of Marvel getting its characters back. He held the fort. Now, Spider-Man leads a summer blockbuster. Torch retuned to the leader.
