I've been watching all the critiques of the #SexStrike today – most emphasizing how it plays into patriarchal & heternormative views of women & sex – and I generally agree with them. but want to add few other thoughts here...
...1) the premise of #SexStrike seems to be that men are denying women's autonomy, so we will "punish" men (via withholding sex) until they relent. but while men/women is certainly an important dynamic at play here, it is not the only one by far...
...the primary dynamic here is social conservatives (of mixed genders) enforcing their ideology on the majority who oppose their views. today it is about abortion. other times it is about LGBTQ+ ppl, or immigrants, or other issues... #SexStrike
...I have not seen a poll, but would bet that most men are against (or at least, not in favor of) these extreme-anti-choice measures. so striking "against men" seems unlikely to change the situation much, if at all, in this situation... #SexStrike
...if you want to change these social conservative politicians' minds, you need to target *THEM*, through political and/or financial pressure, which leads me to: 2) people are calling for boycotts of Georgia (e.g., persuading companies to not to do business there)...
...this is garnering understandable pushback even among progressives, as it could impact the livelihoods of many Georgians who are opposed to this policy. plus, the reality is that social conservatives in almost every state would *love* to pass bills like this...
...(not to mention anti-LGBTQ+ & other bigoted legislation). so, rather than boycott Georgia, why not have a #GeneralStrike, where everyone across the country refuses to work for a day or more? and instead of making this about men... #SexStrike
...make it about social conservatives going too far. a more general #NoToGilead campaign (btw, I'm just spitballin' here, I promise, we can call it something else...) would unite many marginalized groups & progressives to stand together on this...
...if Republicans (and their donors) get the sense that pushing extreme-social-conservative agendas will have huge negative financial/funding implications, there is less of a chance that they will forward these sorts of bills in the future...
...anyway, that's my 2¢. and now, back to your regularly scheduled program, which is already in progress
