Historically-speaking though, the sacking of King's Landing is well in-line with what any city could look forward to, where it to succumb to an assault.

As the citizen of Zhongdu (Beijing) would find out first-hand in 1214, once the siege has been enacted...
there's no quarter given once the city submits - regardless of how long it took. KL citizens might feel themselves lucky were they to learn that the denizens of Zhongdu endured 6mo. of starvation - in the end resorting to cannibalism & widespread suicide jumping off the walls...
...only to have the rest of the city put to the torch, them slaughtered almost to the last man, woman, & child... and their bodies stacked outside the city to rot in pile so high outside observers later thought they were snow-capped hills.

History is way more hardcore than HBO.
From a later recounting of the event by the eldest son of Genghis Khan, Jochi:

"Zhongdu was not one but four cities. We took each of them in turn, methodically killing and razing everything that dared stand upright under Tengri...
"The palaces and gardens of the [Jin Emperor] were ransacked, revealing such riches that the tribute paid [>1yr] before [now] seemed derisory & humiliating.
"A whole moon was needed to collect the bodies & count them. & the city burned for another moon still, creating such a stench that [even] the scavengers kept away."
