On the day when #ShyamaPrasadMukharjee was arrested in #Kashmir and died in custody protesting different constitution for Kashmir, let’s remember an aspect, as much in fashion as it is forgotten. On this day when #PriyankaSharma is in Jail for meme of @MamataOfficial . #FoE
Why #Nehru became so uneasy with #Freedom which was just won in one year that he wanted to amend the constitution? Mostly because of few articles in the press, critical of government which he tried to ban, but couldn’t due to fundamental rights. But that was one reason.
One big reason was #NehruLiyaqat pact. Many nationalists, including Dr Mukharjee considered partition temporary aberration and believed that nation will eventually become one. Nehru didn’t like that and a speech which could cause “excitement in neighbouring nation” was included
Can you imagine, worried about reaction in Pakistan #Nehru created a law which went against what we as a nation fought for three centuries.
Today #RahulGandhi wants to project himself and congress as defender of democracy. Subservient media wants to run down emergency as #HuaTohHua and project #Nehru as apostle of #FoE. Somnath Lahiri said the 1st Amendment seemed like written from police Constable’s PoV.
Nehru made an argument that when the opposition doubts parliament and wants the censoring authority rest with judiciary, they are like British which can’t run internal body but trust external agency like the judiciary. Both Gogoi Sahab and Derek Brien will be very proud
“Does he(Nehru) feel that he is incapable today to carry on the administration of the country unless he is clothed with more and more powers to be arbitrarily utilised so that his will may be the last word on the subject?” Dr Mukherjee responded To Sagarika’s democratic hero.
I doubt if Rahul Gandhi has read this. No, it wasn’t Shashi Tharoor retorting to Fascist @narendramodi . It was #ShyamaPrasadMukharjee responding to #Nehru who considered INDIA a Jamindari. He was a good Jamindar, but that’s what he was. #FoE
#ShyamaPrasadMukharjee objected to #Nehru trying to frame Courts as external entity and said-
“They are our own chosen selected men holding office during their life, entrusted with the duty of seeing whether the country is being administered in the spirit of the Constitution.”
#RahulGandhi and #Congress claims to be defender of #constitution. Here is what #Nehru said-
“you wish to kill this Constitution make it sacred and sacrosanct -- certainly....
#Nehru made an argument of Public order and Acharya Kripalani responded- “The agitator is not the trouble but the trouble is the conditions in this country. Improve those conditions and all the power you want we will give you.” #FoE
#ShyamaPrasadMukharjee objected to the bill stating that it only represented will of majority party in the parliament not the people. An amendment impacting fundamental rights should be taken to people.
When the matter came about the #Press and #media , the darling of modern press since Indira’s emergency, #Nehru known for non-Sanghi eloquence quotes British PM and says- “ They (the Press) had harlot’s privilege of power with no responsibility. “
The premise of Bill was the advocacy of the annulment of Partition by Dr Mukharjee and some leaders. In democratic spirit, #ShyamaPrasadMukherjee says- We have right to demand it, and #Nehru as leader of big party has right to ask people not to listen to us. Why bring a bill?
On #Nehru contention that #judiciary isn’t evolved enough to handle democracy, Dr Mukherjee says - Would it mean that executive will acquire unhinged powers?
