Sigh. Really not a fan of our new Think Piece Genre: "listen up you stupid women, I as an Enlightened Historian of Military History will now lecture you about how This Was Totally How GoT was Going to Go."

A: dragons motherfucker
B: history is not purely ruled by fear
C: so apparently realism doesn't matter when the people in a city who have *literally torn their pope limb from screaming limb and ate him* are somehow not rioting when their murderess Queen (who blew up their holy sites) decides to *invite a siege of dragon fire*
Oh and most important of all, D:
Ok so you're making a decent case for why Danaerys has been forced into Machiavellian rule by terror, and you've even made the reasonable observation that *all her allies betrayed her* to push her to do it. Good. So why is *she* the villain?
You just made the excellent case that this is a woman driven to the edge by the treachery of her advisors and allies, many out of petty resentment or preference for a male heir or selfish neurosis and naivete.

But it's *male* showrunners who declared them the Good Guys to do so
And *that* more than anything I think is why so many women are flipping their fucking lids and are *RIGHT TO DO SO*

Varys, for instance, traitorous worm. Tried to kill his queen (for the second time!) the MOMENT he found Targaryen blood attached to a penis. Fuck him.
It is reasonable for you to observe - despite the showrunners explicitly saying it was Her Crazy Switch Flipped, to reconcile all the times they said she was NOT a sadist or a monster - that this can be seen in a cold, calculating antihero light.

So why don't you praise it?
In fact, "history is ruled purely by fear and brutality" is consistently one of GoT's biggest edgelord radical departures from history. Which is just as frequently ruled by duty, legitimacy and ideology. (Awful convenient Westeros has no meaningful religion, huh?)
It's real satisfying to patriarchy though, so it's right in with other HBO series.
So yeah, you wanna go all "she's a mad queen!" then you gotta deal with the sexism and bad execution.

But if "it's just Machiavellian amorality," you gotta reckon with why she's punished in the story for what other (mostly male) characters *put her into*.

Can't do both.
Basically: the issue is where our male showrunners decided the protagonist would be.
Side note. That was a weird phrase. Now I'm thinking "limbs don't scream"
Ps: also for the record Dany has the same cold problem every one of these illegitemate tyrants in this show have, in that case:

She needs to sleep eventually.
