I am one of 17M Americans with #cancer right now.
Some of us will survive, some will not.
Our survival should not be predicated on our health insurance.
#M4A is an imperative step toward universal coverage and keeping us all living as long as possible.
Every candidate must support #UniversalHealthCoverage. Access to care is the single most important issue for all Americans regardless of party. EVERYONE has a family member who's sick: parent, spouse, child. No one should face bankruptcy to care for a loved one.
My father's final illness bankrupted me. I got sick soon after. This is a common story. But unlike our peers in Canada, UK, France or Germany, we have no recourse but to accrue massive hospital bills and risk losing everything to care for a sick loved me.
#M4A is a promise.
Details of #M4A will be wrangled when we have a Democrat in office--just as they were for the #AffordableCareAct, which changed & saved millions of lives, including my own through the law's various protections. But the ACA is ONLY a law. It is not insurance, it's not coverage.
My 3wk hospital stay in 2015 cost $260k. I had no surgical procedures.I'd gotten a pulmonary embolism working on a book. I was in ICU for half of that time. What cost that much?10mins a day with the pulmonologist? Oxygen? Blood tests? Heart monitor? Bad veg food? What?
Any candidate who doesn't understand WHY we need #M4A is too comfy in their own privilege. (They are all millionaires or close to it. Gillibrand is the poorest with only $500k net worth.)
One trip to the ER sans insurance can ruin your life financially. That must cease.
So the parsing of what #M4A means is a canard. IT IS A PROMISE. It says that candidate will work to get us #UHC so folks like me, @AdyBarkan, @morethanmySLE, @DisVisibility don't have to spend all our limited energy fighting Washington for the basic tools for survival.
So demand your candidate sign onto #M4A. Demand it for the millions of folks like me with #cancer or the millions of kids with #autism or the millions of #disabled Americans. The only people who DON'T need #M4A are rich. If you aren't, you need it.
