I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I’m not going to do that on the #Alabama assault on choice. Let’s just be clear, this has nothing to do with religion, or protecting children.
1. This isn’t about some insistence on Christian principles. Jesus gave us his commands- to love thy neighbor, to heal the sick, and give back to the poor. Do you see Alabama doing anything about the poor?
2. Most of Christianity opposes the death penalty. Has Alabama taken recent steps to eliminate it? Let me know.
3. Let’s talk about Alabama on protecting children. Are they doing anything to protect them from gun violence, insure quality housing, provide them quality health care, fund their schools, and insure their nutrition? Let me know.
4. If you’re pro-life from conception to birth, you’re not pro-life. You’re just anti-choice. If you are only Christian when convenient, you’re not Christian. If you don’t care about kids we have living (all of them), you ain’t pro-children. Let’s not lie about this.
5. I can have honest disagreement with someone who has principles and lives them. If you’re consistent, I’ll call you whatever you want. Not these #Alabama legislators though. I’m gonna call them hypocrites. And I’m going to call them out here.
6. The American pro-life conservative isn’t pro-Christian, pro-child, or pro-life, on average. They show us that in their actions. So what is this really about?
7. This is about subjugating women. This is about denying them the safety to live as free as men. This is about misogyny. This is about the preservation of patriarchy.
8. This is about the declining white man- yes, I’ll go here- that is insecure, inadequate, scared, unprepared, and incapable in a 2019 world, trying to preserve his place. He is doing so by denying opportunity to all others.
9. Now I will note here, I’m a white man. I sometimes feel those emotions too. Life has become harder for white men of lesser skill and means. That’s not a good thing. But lashing out at women and minorities for that is misplaced rage. They didn’t do this to you.
10. I was also raised Catholic and don’t like abortions. I’d like to see them be more rare. I subscribe to @BillClinton’s “safe, legal, and rare” theory of abortion. It’s best for our society.
11. First, the legal part- it’s not for me to impose my religion or values on you. Women are autonomous beings. They can have their own values and beliefs. The living woman should take first precedent over everyone else in this matter.
12. Second though, giving women maximum choice and protection- through protecting Roe, funding @PPFA, making sure women can access contraception, and actual sex ed in our schools- this is what makes abortion more rare, and keeps women safe.
13. Imposing policies that limit these things causes more pregnancy, leads to more health complications for women, causes more abortions, and most importantly, causes more *unsafe* abortions.
14. Don’t take my word for it. Look at which administrations had the lowest abortion rates, teen pregnancies, and other related, unwanted statistics. It’s clear.
15. Imposing criminal penalties on women seeking abortions, even in cases of rape and incest, is not only cruel, it doesn’t work. Heart-beat bills don’t lessen abortion. Defunding Planned Parenthood doesn’t work. We know this though. Statistics don’t lie.
16. I’d really like to not dump on the whole state of #Alabama, or #Georgia, or #Ohio. Really. I don’t think it’s fair or productive, and a lot of people are going to suffer in these states. I’d like you to keep them in your thoughts today.
17. But don’t give these insecure little men in their legislatures the comfort of saying they’re Christian, or want to protect kids, or that they’re pro-life. They’re not. They’re not principled either. What they are is embarrassments.
18. I’m not hopeful that this will end anytime soon. So much ties into it. Insecure masculinity. Sexism. Racism (Yes, this will hurt WOC far more). This stuff is ingrained in some of these guys. It’s even ingrained in a chunk of the women.
19. This is precisely why, while I’m not an absolutist on making everything about identity politics, you cannot slam the Democratic Party for campaigning in part on identity politics. The most important issues in some lives aren’t about classism.
20. So my only advice to you- elect people who will fight back against this in 2020. Real lives are at stake. And don’t stop at POTUS. We messed up in 2016, but every race from local to President matters. Internalize that.
