Thread. Long: I'm feeling a profound sadness. A deep sadness. One that is inhabiting my very core. Why? I've lived long enough to know what life was like before women won their necessary & long overdue rights. Trust me when I say that April 17, 1982 was a day filled with
boundless joy for women all over #Canada. Our rights were enshrined into our Charter of Rights & Freedoms on that day. It was a very long road from being legally considered “persons” to finally being treated – at least on paper – as equals under the law.

Now I'm seeing our very
hard won rights under attack. Particularly our right to a safe, medical abortion. What's stunning about the anti abortion laws being passed in states like #Alabama is the total lack of understanding about why an abortion is performed. The medical reasons include problems with the
normal progress of the pregnancy, health conditions of the mother, & fetal abnormalities. The longer it takes to get an abortion increases the risk of maternal complications such as uterine or systemic infection. By denying safe medical abortions, #Alabama has implemented state
sanctioned murder in cases where a woman has conditions like preeclampsia or cardiovascular disease.

There are ethical questions raised by Alabama's law as well. If a women, teen or child (the latest case involved an 11 year old girl) becomes pregnant due to incest or rape, they
cannot abort the foetus. They must, under these heartbreaking & gruesome circumstances, carry to term. This is state sanctioned incest & rape. Both are illegal but should a pregnancy occur, you are forced, against your will to give birth to the result of this horrifying criminal
act. In essence, a woman, teen or child becomes the property of the state should she be so unfortunate to become pregnant.

Women, teens & girls in #Alabama are now subject to state sanctioned murder & become the property of the state should pregnancy ocurr. Think about that.
#Canada has a tendency to follow in the footsteps of the #USA. What's happening in #Alabama could happen here. You think I'm being alarmist? All you need do is look to #Ontario where we have MPPs like @samoosterhoff. He attended the anti abortion March for Life rally in Toronto
where he said, “We pledge to make abortion unthinkable in our lifetime.” That statement shows an appalling ignorance of the medical issues I've outlined above. It underscores the entitled male belief that women are incapable making decisions regarding their health or just about
anything else. It tramples on our right to dominion over our bodies. It spits on Section 28 of our #Charter.

I honestly think election 43 is one of the most important elections in
#Canadian history. If we elect a #CPC gov't expect Section 28 to be under the gun. Out of all our
provinces & territories, 7 fly one version or another of the #CPC flag. Opening the constitution becomes possible under these conditions.

It is my firm belief that all progressives must rally around the #Liberals in Oct. If we split the vote, we insure a #CPC win under the
leadership of a man who is a #social #Conservative. A person who would love to do to #Canadian women what #Alabama did to theirs. This fact is what's caused my profound, deep sadness. This sinking feeling that all the hard work done by women like Nellie McClung (personhood) &
Doris Anderson (Section 28) will be trampled on; revoked. As a woman who was born in the 1950s this stikes terror in my heart. I know first hand what happened to the women, teens & girls during that period euphamistically dubbed, The Madmen Era. The thought of its rebirth, in
2019, is soul/mind numbing. Sadening. Infuriating. If we elect a #Liberal gov't we insure the safety & support of our #Charter rights. If we're lucky, we will also witness the toppling of the #Trump Regime & the #AltRight inhuman menace along with it.

If you are a woman, if you
are a male ally, who values your rights under our #Charter, you must vote for your #Liberal candidate in Oct. Winning rights is exponentially harder than losing them. Getting them back will be torturous. Please. For the love of your personhood, for the love of the #Canada you
know & appreciate, let alone your rights under Section 28, vote #Liberal in Oct. The alternative sets the stage for #Alabama north. #cdnpoli #canpoli #onpoli #WomensRights
