1/A few things for context on today's #TrumpImmigration announcement:

1) It doesn't have a chance as proposed
2) That doesn't matter
3) It will end family immigration as we know it
4) It will strongly favor whiteness & wealth
5) It does nothing for #DREAMers or undocumented
2/ "This plan was not developed by politicians. It was developed by people you respect."

Not how I'd describe Stephen Miller but ok
3/ No surprise: proposal starts with a massive border militarization package to be paid for by a "trust fund" funded by fees "from the border itself."

Leave it to this guy to solve everything with a trust fund, amirite
4/ The proposal to fix the "broken asylum system" seems to mostly be to claim that most asylum seekers are lying.

Trump also plays the "elderly veterans" and "at-risk youth" cards, as if these funds have anything to do with one another
5/ Trump claims that new law will make "gang members and criminals inadmissible."

Does someone... want to tell him about current law, or
6/ Trump claims that 66% of immigrants come by "random chance," then clarifies that he means FAMILIES actually, because what could be more random than loving your mother

#TrumpImmigration
7/ Does anyone else think the President calling family-based immigration "senseless" seems like he's maybe telling on himself a little?
8/ "We discriminate against genius. We discriminate against brilliance."

-- Donald J. Trump, a brilliant genius elected President of the United States solely on his own personal merits.

#TrumpImmigration
9/ Trump does not mention that no other developed nation to adopt a merit-based immigration system has completely gutted its family visa system to the degree this proposal would do
10/ "A greencard system that promotes a rising standard of living"?

Read: "no more shithole countries, folks--it's all going to be all white from here"
11/ Now he's somehow (not sure how) tying this announcement to criminal justice reform... without mentioning that "crimmigration" reform is just as vitally necessary as much of the bill he recently signed
12/ "They must come in through merit and skill."

--Donald J. Trump, a man who obtained everything he ever got through merit and skill
13/ The "Build America Visa" sounds like something a military credit union would issue to a new recruit
14/ I'm all for an entrepreneur visa, and that's something that has been on the docket for a long time.
15/ Trump announces that an English and civics exam will be required to gain residency (presently only for citizenship). This is an extremely controversial proposal going back to President McKinley. Republicans typically opposed it as it threatened their supply of cheap labor.
16/ I understand that this particular brand of "merit-based" bullshit will sound pretty good to most Americans. I am not in theory opposed to a points-based system to *supplement* existing paths, but this is a total overhaul squarely aimed at making and keeping a white nation.
17/ If this is *anything* like 2017's proposed #RAISEAct (as I presume it will be), the game will be rigged to favor white, wealthy, privileged immigrants and leave the rest behind.
18/ And of course Trump himself is living fucking proof that "merit" is a meaningless joke in the United States as of 2019, so let's maybe reflect on that a minute before letting Republicans design this alleged immigration meritocracy
