For those following ins and outs of #raceshifting in QC, yesterday we drove through a region known as Lanaudière (NE of MTL). The Métis Federation of Canada [sic] recognizes this region as birthplace of "Québec Métis" due to some creative revisionism.
One person in particular has been busily re-creating the region as "Métis" on social media... funny enough, I have dozens of same ancestors as this person, born in Berthierville, St-Damien-de-Brandon, Lanoraie, Lavaltrie, St-Cuthbert, L'Assomption. #raceshifting
You might otherwise recognize the region as #Chicot in their writing. Our ancestors are French-Canadian, as much as the MFC & this person may want it to be otherwise. The "evidence" that they mobilize is mostly based on lateral relations, not direct ancestral relations.
The type I write about in my upcoming book. Like, my great-great-great-uncle's brother's cousin was a voyageur who moved to Red River and that makes me (and the entire region where said "uncle" is from) "Métis" today. 🤦‍♂️

Nope. Not true. #raceshifting
It turns out that according to their own blog, their individual claim is based on - wait for it - 1 Indigenous ancestor in 1600s! + 1 made-up "Indigenous" ancestor who's French woman. + 1 completely made-up ancestor who professional genealogists say never existed. #raceshifting
In fact, I have triple Indigenous ancestry as this infamous (and abusive!) person (all from 1600s). Still white, French-descendant though.

So, next time that you see something about #Chicot "Métis", don't hesitate to ask me about my dozens of ancestors from there! #raceshfiting
Just got back to this ... here's what a genealogy meant to facilitate #raceshifting looks like: Louis Riel, 4th cousin, 4 times removed. Tens of thousands of French-descendants are "related" genealogically to Riel in this manner. He's my eighth cousin, many many times removed!
I call this the practice of "lateral descent" in my upcoming book. It's quite common, especially when it comes to actual Métis ancestors. There are genealogical programs that will facilitate these results with a historical figure of your choosing. #raceshifting
And here's another example, this time, of what I call "aspirational descent" in my book. In this case, a well-known French woman (Françoise Garnier/Grenier) married in 1665, is turned into an "Indigenous" woman. Note the addition of feathers to indicate Garnier's "indigeneity".
Also note, that this promoter of #Chicot "métis" idea, supported by MFC, & herself a former MFC board member, is relying in part on a 12th-generation French woman to become "Québec métis". #raceshifting

This is common (about 30%) in over 5,000 cases I've examined.
In 2nd chapter of "Distorted Descent: White Claims to Indigenous Identity," I explain how 4 well-known French women (I found out *after* writing chapter that 3 are my ancestors) have become "Indigenous", + what that tells us about #raceshifting movement

Here's part of response to my twitter thread, which shows extent to which those leading #raceshifting movement are willing to go to undermine Métis self-determination and sovereignty. In this case, former MFC board member tweets statement made by "Québec métis" leader...
Let's analyze this leader's words. In 2012, he was spokesperson for org. called Nation Métis Québec. According to him, what makes the Métis are French-Canadian men from Lanaudière northwest of Mtl. No mention of Métis kinship relations with Cree, Saulteaux, Assiniboine, Dene.
As @ZoeSTodd and @AdeseJennifer explain in interview below, these efforts to de-indigenize the Métis debase Indigenous women, who are those ultimately responsible for Métis identity. These efforts are common in "eastern métis" movement.

In addition, the "eastern métis" activist who tweeted out this statement also failed to mention that the same leader spoke out about the post-Powley "métis movement" in QC. So, strangely, this same Senate testimony undoes most of the MFC's lobbying work:
"There have been many developments in this file, not the least of which was that, since Supreme Court decision in the Powley case, a number of organizations have claimed or said they are Metis in QC. For us, that is an affront because there are barely 1,500 or 2,000 of us in QC."
Even the leader who claims that the Métis ALL come from Québec (!), acknowledges that post-Powley movement has gone way too far! His organization opposes self-ID as sole basis for Indigenous identity and rejects 10,000s of people in QC saying they're "Métis". #raceshifting
Why would promoter of "Chicot Métis" a) support idea that ALL Métis come from QC; b) debase contribution of Indigenous women to Métis identity; c) omit the fact that leader she's citing is 100% against her own efforts to turn 10,000s of people in Québec into "Indigenous" people?
So goes intellectual efforts to create a distinct Métis people in provinces east of Ontario: distort your ancestors' identities, turn French women in 1600s into "Indigenous" women, misrepresent your relation to a historical figure, use arguments as "evidence" #raceshifting
