So, I just want to gently remind folks who point out many sex workers are in the industry because wages are shit, that wages aren’t the only consideration in enabling ppl to leave the industry. There’s a lot more to discuss.
Wages are a huge factor, of course. But many sex workers also have other considerations. I keep seeing folks talk about how increased wages means a sex worker can just leave the industry and go work in a customer service job. It’s simply not true.
This line of thinking assumes there’s accessible transportation. The person involved can stand up for a shift 5-6 days a week. That they have a free schedule to engage in shift work. The service industry is notorious for never having set schedules.
If the person has children and no baby sitter, can they really do shift work? If they have a disability and can’t stand for 9 hours a day, what do they do? If they don’t have a car, how do the get to work?

These are all considerations, and merely raising wages isn’t enough
There’s 2 things happening.

1 an over simplification of how/why people are in the sex work industry and

2 not realizing how exploitative our system is to workers in general. We need much more than increased wages. We need more labor rights.
Y’all make me tired af. This argument/ debate was specifically tailored to “unskilled” labor for a reason. Ppl assume sex workers are inherently incompetent and can’t get “real” jobs.
