The NRC is a longstanding saga on the Indo-Bangladeshi border, complicated by ethnic and communal tensions. But the BJP has tried use it to whip up support over curbing the influx of Muslim immigration & protecting India's borders - much like Trump.
But the key point here is as many as 2m Hindus have also been left off the citizenship list, tangling the BJP's otherwise Hindu majoritarian vision for India. The process is fraught, millions are fighting in court & detention centres are full - much like our own border saga
But I've met dozens of families who fear being left off the NRC come July, when the final list is published. What happens to those who are deemed illegal? There are no deportation agreements in place. Millions could be left stateless. An international crisis is on the horizon.
