@womensmarch Since you're still lying about women's concerns about the #EqualityAct, let me clarify: As currently written, Equality Act guts women's sex-based protections by redefining sex to include sex stereotypes, "mannerisms," and gender identity (aka "sex stereotypes 2.0").
@womensmarch When the law can't "see" sex--like when #EqualityAct equates sex, gender identity, sex stereotypes, and mannerisms--the law can't be used to fight sexism. What feminists are asking is that the law protect transgender people AS transgender people, AND protect women as a sex class
@womensmarch This is, FYI, what so-called "TERFs" get tarred and feathered for saying: We want trans people to be protected from violence, discrimination, and harassment. We also know that sex matters. We want to protect the rights of women and girls, too.
@womensmarch Fortunately, it's possible to do both of these things! Instead of redefining sex (and so erasing sex-based protections for women/girls) to protect transgender people, as the #EqualityAct does, we can protect the rights of transgender people as transgender people.
@womensmarch But if we redefine sex to include "sex stereotypes," gender identity, and "mannerisms" to protect trans people, then trans people gain rights at the expense of women and girls, and we make it impossible for the law to 'see' and fight sexism.
@womensmarch Women are oppressed on the basis of sex. Look at last week -- who will be affected by #abortionbans and what characterizes the "people" who will be affected? I think you'll find they all have some important things in common. Sex matters.
@womensmarch If you're honest with yourself, @womensmarch, you know sex matters, too. You know whether you have to worry about Alabama's #abortion ban affecting you or not. You know that whether you're affected by abortion restrictions or not has nothing to do with how you "identify."
@womensmarch Sex and gender identity are different things. We need to recognize that and protect sex and gender identity separately. If we pretend they're the same thing, we lose the ability to protect women and girls on the basis of sex, which is the basis of women's oppression.
@womensmarch If any of this resonates with you, if you think sex matters more than you feel like it's permissible to 'say' in this political climate (e.g.,"Abortion is a women's issue--it's about controlling women as a class"),it's OK to have doubts. It's OK to dissent. Your rights matter, too
@womensmarch Ask yourself why orgs like @womensmarch that claim to support #womensrights are lying to you about what some women ("TERFs") believe about sex & gender identity, & lying to you about how the #EqualityAct sacrifices women's rights to advance transgender rights when we can do both
@womensmarch Ask yourself who benefits when some women's speech is silenced because those women insist that sex matters to women's lives.
@womensmarch Ask yourself why it's "transphobic" to insist that sex matters in the lives of women and girls. What does that have to do with transphobia?
@womensmarch Ask yourself why women aren't being allowed to name the basis of our oppression: our sex, our ability to reproduce and the ways that the lives of women and girls have been restricted and controlled throughout history to exploit our reproductive labor.
@womensmarch Ask yourself why women are being asked to take a backseat in our own liberation movement at a moment when our rights are under attack. Doesn't that seem kind of misogynistic? Why are we being asked to give up our hard-won rights?
