Today, Alberta's government will introduce a bill which significantly reduces the stringency of our actions on climate change, reduces the value of GHG-reducing innovations and places the burden of meeting our GHG reduction goals solely on our largest emitters. #cdnpoli #ableg
AB has, for as long as I've been here, argued that all GHG emissions matter, and that blaming the oil sands and other AB large emitters for Canada's GHG challenges is a wrong-headed approach. Today's speech from the throne will place that burden on the oil sands. #AbLeg #Cdnpoli
The Alberta that I've known for more than a decade would have stood up to an Ontario Premier who said the problem was (AB) polluters not commuters, and who looked at this graph and said, "I see where the problem is." Today, @jkenney will agree with a Premier saying that. #ableg
@jkenney We've had a Premier in Alberta who told the country that technology would solve our GHG problems, that we could drastically reduce emissions with measures like CCS and other expensive technologies. Anyone remember these commitments? #AbLeg
@jkenney Do you know why those commitments weren't met? It wasn't because tech didn't materialize - it's because those commitments were projections of what would happen under a stringent set of policies - policies which were never implemented. Technology deployment doesn't just happen.
@jkenney What measures were behind those projections? An escalating economy-wide carbon charge increasing from $15/t in 2008 to $100/tonne in 2050 and regulation that all new, large industrial facilities incorporate carbon capture and storage by 2015 wherever possible. #ableg #Cdnpoli
Over the next few days, you'll hear about how technology will solve the problem from those introducing legislation which reduces by 1/3 the value of emissions-reducing innovation in large industrial sectors and destroys any value it would have had outside those sectors. #ableg
Ask yourselves why that would be the case? Why would entrepreneurs be more likely to develop technology which now has a lower value? That's not going to be the case, no matter how much wishing goes on in the Premier's office. Capital will be invested where it earns a return.
I really hope that the most ambitious views on oil sands tech are valid, and not just because the Premier's about to make a big bet on that. Enjoy the throne speech, Alberta. Then get ready to have your resource industry back as the climate change focal point. #ableg #cdnpoli
