Pakistan welcomes the re-election of India PM Narendra Modi to a second term. He makes Indian history. In this #thread, I explain why Islamabad is pleased to see #Modi win & how a historic opportunity emerges to resolve #Kashmir, make peace./1

During the dogfight over #Kashmir skies in Feb 2019, when a #Pakistan-#India nuclear war became a possibility, unprecedented international diplomatic intervention diffused tensions & averted war. But unlike previous crises, many things changed this time. One: world listened to
#Pakistan this time instead of just listening to #India. The 6-times smaller country was always smothered under the attention that India received globally. This time, #NewDelhi overreached, crossed int'l borders to conduct airstrike inside Pak. Strike failed, pilot captured.
#Pakistan shooting down #Indian jets & PM #ImranKhan's move to release captured Indian pilot #AbhiNandan with honor won #Islamabad admirers inside India & globally. Many #Indians agreed their govt shouldn't have violated int'l borders with Pak. But Pakistan came under heavy
pressure too. While #India was under pressure for violating borders & for not proving it actually hit a terror camp in #Pakistan, #Islamabad was under pressure to finally do something about some extremist groups, especially #MasoodAzhar whom Pak+#China refused to add to a #UN
terror list. So #Pakistan took unprecedented steps, closing down offices of all groups that backed any form of violence against #India in #Kashmir. #Islamabad & #China also accepted India's demand that #MasoodAzhar be listed in the UN terror list. Under #US pressure, India
agreed to remove any references to #Pakistan/#Kashmir regarding terrorism. Everybody got what they wanted. #Russia/#China also intervened to reconcile Pakistan & #India. The biggest story is this: getting to the brink of a nuclear war helped many #Indians & #Pakistanis think why
it's important to live & prosper, enjoy a good life, and how economic cooperation in the region is better than war. For this, 71yo #Kashmir conflict must be resolved. And this is where both PM #Modi & #Pakistan have given signs to their international partners they're ready to
work on resolving #Kashmir after #IndiaElections2019. So the time comes. Everybody really wants #Pakistan & #India to resolve the K-Conflict, which centers around a #KashmirReferendum to allow #Kashmiris join either Ijd/Pak. But it's not that easy. Let's see how it plays out but
the #US #China #Russia #UK #EU #SaudiArabia #UAE all want #Pakistan & #India to resolve #Kashmir so that progress on other economic & political projects in the region can move forward. But it's not going to happen soon or easy. And a new player will enter the stage soon:
the #Kashmiris, who are central to any conflict resolution.

One last observation: No politician can become a PM in #Pakistan on a platform of religious nationalism & intimidating minorities. It happened in #India. Hope PM #Modi can address the atmosphere of #hate because this
is linked to peace with #Pakistan. Lastly, #Modi deserves credit for one thing: He has changed the face of #Indian politics for good and squarely defeated family-based dynastic politics. This is a good example from #India that many #Pakistanis can appreciate. #AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
