Long, thoughtful, fascinating exploration of #Bernie's history. This narrative makes Bernie immensely more accessible and even likeable. His long financial origin story is quintessentially American in its working-class to riches trajectory.

I've written about #Sanders over the years and like most leftists, thought his politics were an essential prod to others in Congress. But there are details of his political history here that #Bernie should be pushing instead of hiding: like that he was a Harvard fellow.
#Sanders is often presented as s spendthrift, but what propelled #Bernie from 3-term mayor of tiny Burlington into the House was his fiscal responsibility. He literally was deemed the Republican Trotskyite while mayor for reeling in spending and building the city's coffers.
One of #Sanders' great failures as a communicator is his rudeness--he's way too comfortable being obnoxious to reporters, voters and anyone else who challenges him. Yet he has a really solid story here about how he became a millionaire worth about $5M in real estate & stocks.
Yes, #Bernie made a lot of money off his 2016 run. But prior to that, he was building a typical middle class lifestyle (albeit with a DC house worth $2M, but it wasn't worth that when he bought it) over many years, with used cars and bills paid haphazardly.
The headline here is clickbait, but the story is really compelling reading. As with the often delightful cable access tapes of #Sanders as mayor that have recently been unearthed,
this is likely meant to inflame but does the opposite by humanizing Sanders beyond his rhetoric.
#Sanders' history as mayor was of surrounding himself with brilliant people who helped him make things work. Perhaps he can do that again, perhaps not. But one thing is clear from this: 80s #Bernie was nicer, if poorer. He should try reining in the vitriol to flog his polling.
The main takeaway here isn't that being rich changed #Bernie. It's that settling into a narrative of class war changed Bernie. We can fight for the 98% and not be asshats as AOC and others of us prove daily. Bernie needs to go back to his very real origins and lead from there.
