A #brexit thread 👇

1. In 2017 we were invited to #No10 to talk to Gavin Barwell about our thoughts on things. I had a conversation with him on #Brexit that rings absolutely true now and is more relevant than ever - so I thought I'd share:
2. I said to him that #Brexit had redrawn 'party lines' - that right/left was now less relevant that #leave/#remain and we had to examine our 'core vote' on that basis. We had done well in the #Mansfield-esque seats and lost the Croydons, we needed to think about why.
3. I said to Barwell that there was no compromise that would keep both #remainers and #leavers happy. That we could not keep both audiences on board in the context of #Brexit and we should not try - it's impossible. We had to leave first, and then we could rebuild the coalition.
4. We had the #referendum, we promised we would respect the result, we said in our manifesto we'd sort it. There was only one side we could pick - #leave - and we could not both win more Mansfields and win back the Croydons for as long as #Brexit remained the key issue
5. Pretty clear; no messing or fudging it, #leave first and then get back to domestic politics, accepting that your 'core vote' might be different come the end of the process, but you can only go for broad appeal once you've finished the divisive job of #Brexit. He disagreed...
6. I was right then, and it's still true now. Those parties that have had a clear stance - #Brexit party and Lib Dems - have done better, #Labour and Cons have lost relevance through having no clear message and not keeping promises. We have to now go back to what I said in 2017.
7. Get #Brexit done. October 31st, come what may, is the end. Some people won't like it, but leaders are there to lead and take decisions, not to fudge and delay. We won't get permission to talk #schools and #hospitals unless we deliver on the Brexit promise.
8. Colleagues who don't see that, those saying they won't endorse leaving without an #agreement (and in doing so preventing us from getting a #betterdeal) should recognise their approach leads to the end of our political structures, to civil unrest even. Leaving is not optional
