In view of the MSM's new-found interest in keeping things classified, let's review a little bit of what occurred in early January of 2017. First, on 1/5/17, the IC briefed President Obama and certain top official regarding the dossier, among other classified "Russia" material.
Then, on January 6, 2017, Comey privately briefed the President elect on the same material, cautioning that CNN was looking for a "news hook" to publish this secret material, a meeting that Comer classified as "SECRET" in a 1/7/17 email to McCabe, Baker & Ribicki:
Somehow, this big secret was kept quiet through and including a 1/10/17 hearing on Capital Hill, in which such super-sensitive materials were not not discussed publicly, but only in classified private session. c-span.org/video/?421334-…
Almost immediately after that hearing, CNN sprang into action, citing MULTIPLE U.S. official with direct knowledge of a secret 2 page synopsis of the dossier ...
But don't imagine from the timing that it was leaked from that hearing only. At least 4 CNN reporters had been working hard on the story for several days (the briefings were only 4 and 5 days old at the time):
Of course, there were other reporters that were likely on to the story as well. DNCNN just scooped them.
And, wow did DNCNN know a lot! They knew that the Gang of Eight had been briefed (to the exact day), "according to law enforcement, intelligence and administration sources."
DNCNN knew that the secret information coincided on what Senator Reid had been briefed on months earlier:
They knew that the 2 page addendum (exactly 2 pages) was attached to a broader "Russia" report by the 4 top intelligence agencies (exactly 4 agencies):
They knew that a former British ambassador to Russia had given the dossier to McCain, that he gave it to Comey, and that they discussed it for 5 minutes without saying much at that meeting. Great detail, there.
As an aside, we know a lot more today about how Senator McCain got the dossier ...
DNCNN also knew, thought they knew, and/or were willing to report, that the dossier was prepared by a former MI6 guy, that the FBI found credible in the past and that they were vetting his Russian sources.
DNCNN also knew that the dossier material was NOT included in ANOTHER "classified" report. So I guess they knew a lot about THAT "classified" document as well.
DNCNN even seemed to know about an FBI investigation that Comey had that very day (while testifying on the Hill) had declined to discuss in open session, presumably because it was "classified."
BTW, there were plenty of other news outlets that cited to "multiple sources" for similar stories during that time period, including with respect to General Flynn's secretly-recorded phone call(s) with the Russian Ambassador. reuters.com/article/us-usa…
And let's not forget that DNCNN was looking for maximum "impact," as Tapper admits in an email to Buzzfeed when criticizing them for publishing the full dossier itself. "Impact" is apparently more important than allowing the public to actually see & examine a source document.
So let's dispense with the MSM's crocodile tears over disclosing classified material, okay? I'm sure Attorney General Barr will do it intelligently. He will also do it openly, and not by way of leaks to partisans looking for a "news hook." - end
