All love & nothing but respect for my brother @JemarTisby. My following thoughts are not against him, but rather simply sharing my thoughts & concerns the CT DEFINITION OF “Racism”. This gets me in trouble but I think it’s important to discuss.... 1/?
I believe the idea that black people cant be racist due to them not being able to systemically oppressed requires an undeveloped understanding of power dynamics.

Yes, we can grant the definition of prejudice + Power = racism. Not how I’d define it but let’s grant definition 2/?
The problem with using this definition and then concluding “therefore, only white people can be racist” is that it requires seeing systemic oppression as the only way to wield power. There are many ways to wield power beyond the dynamic of power to systemically oppress... 3/?
Verbal abuse exists b/c we recognize the “power of words”. Words have the power to wound, traumatize, & ultimately even lead to the loss of life. Words are powerful! Therefore, someone who is prejudice and wields the power of words to tear down; is racist. Think Hebrew Israelites
We also recognize that written words carry power. The mantra “the pen is mightier than the sword” exists. People with prejudice can use words to destroy based on race/ethnicity and therefore express racism.

There are many diff ways to express power that is fueled by prejudice.
White Supremacy has granted white people a special kind of power in the US; the power to systemically oppress. Systemic oppression is the PRIMARY way in which racism has expressed itself in America. The primary expression of power but not the only expression of power.
As a Christian counselor who provides soul care for those impacted by race based trauma; part of my work is helping people wounded heal in a way that gaurss them against both developing prejudice as well as finding ways to use power (like words) to hurt those who hurt them... 7/?
How we define “racism” is one of the ways we as Christians must back away from CT/CRT. It is helpful to understand the role of power in racism; kudos to CT/CRT for recognizing that. However, Christians must have a more comprehensive understanding of power dynamics. Imo ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Final thoughts.

1. Nothing but love & respect for @JemarTisby so don’t go using this thread to sow division between me & my brother.

2. White people need to STOP calling black people racist every time a black person keeps it 💯 abt racism & the impact of white supremacy.
