/ If you're a freelancer and live in NYC, you should bookmark this page: Complaint for Freelance Workers. It's very easy to file a complaint with the Department of Consumer Affairs, against any company that doesn't pay you on time.

/ A magazine I write for (I won't name it, because editors there are my friends and advocates) stipulates in their contract that payment will be made within 45 days of invoicing. They always pay late, and currently owe me $7,500, including expenses I paid for out of pocket.
/ I filed a complaint against them yesterday, and urge all freelancers to do this any time your check is late. The DCA is just about the only leverage you have.
/ "But Rob, they didn't send me a contract." Did you ask for one? According to the Freelance Isn't Free Act of 2017, an employer must issue a contract, including information on payment, on any job that pays $800 or more.

/ If your contract doesn't specify when the employer agree to pay you, then by default, they have 30 days to pay, after the contracted services are complete. THIRTY. DAYS.
