Twitter seems to be banning or suspending accounts belonging to critics of the Chinese government. It started yesterday May 31th. Here is one report - I noticed a sudden loss of followers yesterday, I checked, it was mainly China critics. Twitter❤️🇨🇳 Amazing! @mouse @1GigiSims
This is happening as an effort to silence #China critics ahead of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, which is next Tuesday. Twitter is helping China do its dirty work to silence the legitimate opposition. Twitter has hit a new all time low! 👎👎👎
One other possibility that can't be discounted is that the #Chinese government is hacking into Twitter and is deleting the accounts of Chinese critics. I did hear reports in the past, that Chinese hackers were able to get into Twitter & do that.
Whichever way it is, we demand that Twitter investigate why the accounts of #China critics are being deleted or suspended. Censoring people that criticize the number one police state in the world that has millions into concentration camps? What's going on Twitter? Retweet please
Another two well known accounts of #China critics that were suspended by #Twitter are: BenTallmadge @BenKTallmadge (32,000 followers) & 郭宝胜 Baosheng Guo @milpitas95035 (104,000 followers). Twitter, we want to know on what basis were these accounts suspended?
We are certainly not the only ones that noticed #Twitter's purge of #Chinese dissidents; here is @robert_spalding talking about this, check his thread:
The account of BenTallmadge @BenKTallmadge that was just reinstated, its suspended again. What's going on @Jack #Twitter? We can also see that after the accounts got reinstated, they lost at least half the followers, why? Why @robert_spalding lost most of his followers?
Another report about #Twitter censoring of accounts that are critical of #China just a few days ahead of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
From a #Chinese dissident in #China: Message just received from a Chinese tweep: “Ystd my followers dropped nearly 100. One of them told me privately that he had been summoned by police and forced to unfollow people and delete account.“
From @joannachiu Joanna Chiu 趙淇欣 Retweeted Yaxue Cao
Noticed a few hours ago that I lost about 300 followers. Thought it was a glitch but seeing posts that numerous Chinese-language accounts were suspended today including Canadian @huanghebian2005.
#Developing A large number of Chinese @Twitter accounts are being suspended today. They “happen” to be accounts critical of China, both inside and outside China. @TwitterSupport @TwitterForGood More than 19K accounts suspended
#TwitterBlackFriday - Its too soon to say, but I think the Chinese hacked Twitter. As much of a censoring record that Twitter has, this is even too much for them, it only makes sense that it was done by the Chinese. There were many reports of China hacking Twitter accnts before
From @BaldingsWorld He put it like it is, shame on Twitter #TwitterBlackFriday
Hey @Jack you realize you're @Twitter thugs have shut down democracy advocates for China before the 30th anniversary of Tiananmen Square? This is not a good look for you guys
This is how I & others experienced the #TwitterBlackFriday : A sudden loss of followers (60 for me in minutes) on Friday night. When accounts get suspended, they show as unfollowers. So I checked using some apps & I see they are ok Chinese people. I knew something was not normal.
From @onefortySujit Recently this happened all over India. @TwitterIndia shadow banned all prominent right wing accounts like @ShefVaidya, @vivekagnihotri, @TrueIndologyliv untill the elections got over. They got a tight slap with the mandate Indians gave
From: I speak panda @voiceofchinatv "It looks like a #BloodyFriday for many Chinese Twitter users today. Massive number of their accounts were suspended and frozen. These accounts share one thing in common: anti-CCP. #封号 #推特 #ThisIsWar "
From: B. Allen-Ebrahimian @BethanyAllenEbr
I just noticed that I suddenly lost around 200 Twitter followers today. @joannachiu noticed the same thing. We’re talking hundreds of accounts here—a whole ecosystem of free-thinking Chinese people in Twitter.
From @gwbstr
This could be an example of active censorship outside China by the Chinese gov, through abuse of this platform's automated systems. Maybe another explanation, but one would expect extraordinary measures for the 30th Tiananmen anniversary
From @macroalpha369
so the purge last night: Twitter 32k+ facebook 40k+ YouTube 5k+ 😡
so the freedom of speech and individual research is also dead in the US now?!
From US Senator Marco Rubio @marcorubio
.@twitter has apparently suspended a large number accounts that are critical of #China including accounts of people outside of China. Twitter has become a Chinese govt censor.
Twitter gave an official response to the purge of China critics & amazing enough, they expect us to believe that it was an unintended mistake. As senator @marcorubio said, "Twitter has become a Chinese govt censor". How much lower can Twitter get?
#Twitter Apologizes After Marco Rubio Calls Company 'Censor' for #China - This was after Twitter suspended thousands of accounts critical of China just 3 days ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Shame on you Twitter 👎 bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
The company said the suspended accounts “were not mass reported by the Chinese authorities — this was a routine action on our part.”
"The accounts were swept up in the company’s ongoing efforts to challenge accounts “engaging in various forms of platform manipulation, including spam and other inauthentic behaviors," according to the company."
"Sometimes our routine actions catch false positives or we make errors," the company tweeted. "We apologize. We’re working today to ensure we overturn any errors but that we remain vigilant in enforcing our rules for those who violate them."
Earlier Saturday, Rubio cited suspended accounts critical of China and retweeted several other postings commenting on the company’s actions.
Yeah, sure Twitter, we are retarded, so we'll believe you that this purge of #China critics accounts just happened to be an unintended accident. Yeah, somehow, your systems have the capability of "randomly" target only those accounts that China wanted to silence. Yeah, yeah.
