Detention proceedings against Mr. #Assange in #Uppsala. #Sweden today.

The @Wikileaks founder is expected to be detained in his absence at Uppsala District Court.
SVT Uppsala sends directly from the district court starting at 9.30.
Hearing begins at 10.00…
Per E Samuelson,- the lawyer who represents Mr. #Assange arrived a little while ago at the Uppsala District Court.
The detention hearing at Uppsala District Court has begun.

The Public Prosecution previously submitted an application for a detention order, in which @aklagareSE requests the court to detain Mr. #Assange in his absence.
After the hearing, Persson will answer questions from media

It is not allowed to record videos or taking pictures inside the courtroom. Every person attending the hearing is undergoing a security-check.
Prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson believes that her client was in a helpless state when she was asleep. She also believes that the negotiations should take place behind closed doors to protect both her client and Assange's integrity.
The lawyer of Mr. Assange: Per E Samuelsson explains that Julian Assange calls for the doors to be kept open for increased transparency.
The doors will be closed, while talking about the suspected rape itself.

Everybody else has to leave the Court room for a while.
While waiting due to lack of transparency in #Sweden ...
Rebooting the hearing
The prosecutor begins by saying that there is a flight danger associated with Julian #Assange. She believes it is fair to detain Assange. The general interest in investigating the crime is higher than the individual's integrity.
Whether there is an escape risk or not, should only be considered today. And today he is in prison, says the lawyer of Mr. Assange - Per E Samuelsson.
The lawyer says: "It is difficult to get rid of the idea that we are sitting here because of rape charges, but because we want to compete with the United States about #extradition"
Mr. #Assange would like to participate. But a question of voluntary participation has not yet seen the light, says the lawyer.
"... therefore he can't be arrested, for the reason of interrogation. We can talk to him via video link or visit him, continues the lawyer.
Investigation orders are lifted by the lawyer as an alternative.
- It's like done for this situation. For why should one detain someone who is already detained? The only reason I see is that you want to compete with the United States, says Samuelsson
"...mail me the investigation and to the prison - I have the address here", says the lawyer who continues to present his arguments.
A final argument is raised by Samuelsson:
- My client must be able to focus on being able to defend himself against the US #extradition application.
Now lawyer Eva-Marie Persson takes over.
Persson: In connection with previous questioning, it has been shown that he is not so cooperative. Although, of course, he has every right to silence.
An arrest in #Sweden would not mean he is a detainee - when he is already in prison.
Eva-Marie Persson: "It's not about competing with the #US, but about the crime being committed in Sweden and being investigated in #Sweden"
Samuelsson criticizes the Prosecutor's opinion on #Assange's willingness to cooperate. He believes that for several years he has tried to get the former prosecutor to come to London to question Assange.
- It never happened.
Everybody is requested to leave the Court room.
( Decision by The District Court is expected around 16.00 - approx 3.5 hours from now )
Appearently some additional information ( documents ) has been submitted to the District Court.
Here we go again...
@wikileaks The District Court has decided that Mr. #Assange is NOT going to be arrested in absentia.
Accordingly the prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson will not issue an #EAW (European Arrest Warrant), as there is no current foundation/basis...
@wikileaks ... however, this does not mean that the prosecution has to be closed down, as there is no requirement that Mr. Assange should be brought to Sweden, as hearings may still be possible to conduct in the #UK.
“I fully respect the court’s decision. They had to take a position on a difficult assessment issue, which I considered should be examined by a court”, says Deputy Director of Public Prosecution Eva-Marie Persson.…
Samuelsson: "There's no reason for Mr. #Assange to travel to #Sweden if the end result will be the same as on the previous 2 occasions and it could very well be a 3rd time after the next questioning of Assange"
Issuance of a European Investigation Order will be issued.

Coffee-time ☕
On a sidenote
What else to expect from @ElisabethMFritz:
"Naive that the district court seems to believe that Assange will cooperate with the prosecutor when he has not done so in 9 years. I assume that the arrest decision is appealed to the Court of Appeal by the prosecutor"
