Ranty thread about the Labour #antisemitism broiges:

"Racism" isn't a thing you are, it's a way in which you think. Research on unconscious racism (not to mention a century of anti-racist movements' experiences) suggests that many allies can and still think in racist ways.
The rightwing's tactic is to find these people and call them antisemites (and by implication as bad as nazis). The use of the noun form rather than the adjective "antisemitic" is important because it implies inability to change.
It effectively transforms the quality of "being racist" from a way of thinking into a disease with no cure. Obviously Livingstone, Willsman et al are not nazis, but it doesn't mean they also can't harbour some racist thinking.
Almost invariably we are all guilty of racist thinking to some degree: we were socialised in a highly racial society, one which has still never grappled with its LONG history of racism. Simply being lefties isn't enough to unlearn that.
By arguing with the right on their own terms (i.e. the noun) rather than the realistic paradigm of racism as a mode of thought (i.e. the adjective) that must be unlearned, we fall into this way of thinking and end up defending people who are unwilling to admit having biases,
let alone examining them. If we're serious about getting rid of racism+AS in society/the party, we must establish a climate in which racism is tackled as a mode of thought one can be educated out of. This means people accused of it need to take a breath and look inside.
And it means that rightwingers who are sincere about ending AS+racism (as opposed to using it cynically as a stick against the left) need to change their language from "@PeterWillsman is an antisemite", to "...said something antisemitic." It may seem trivial, but it isn't.
