"Best minds of our generation" have developed machine learning algorithms that connect pedophiles and amplify white-supremacists, misogynists and anti-vaxxers. Piece says YouTube wouldn't turn off recs because the company said "recommendations are the biggest traffic driver."

* I sent the above tweet again with typo corrected because it's 2019. Naturally, we have ML algorithms for curating and recommending child porn in one of world's biggest platform but no edit button for typos in tweets.
There is not a single surprising sentence in that piece. The system is working as designed, and people have pointed out all these dangers to YouTube for years now. (And why didn't they think of this themselves? Too busy discussing vesting dates? Too many zeroes in bank accounts?)
Here’s my just out piece in @Sciam on YouTube’s recommendation algorithms. Chromebooks are about 50 percent of the K-12 market and they come with YouTube.
YouTube's CEO is a woman, @SusanWojcicki. The person who set up the ad-financed business model for Facebook is a woman, @SherylSandberg. Advocating for diversity is a good thing for many reasons but will not solve these problems.
*make sure your work isn't going into algorithmically curating videos of children in a sexualized manner to recommend them to pedophiles.
Yes. Much of this crucial work comes the academy and journalism—two financially-strapped institutions. Big tech, which is swimming in money, instead invests in AI research that seems to produce better and better algorithms serving the pedophile community.
Thanks to work by @JonasKaiser and @yaso (and their team), @YouTube announced some changes to its recommendations. It’s a shame that, again and again, these essential issues only get somewhat addressed only after independent researchers expose them, and an outcry happens.
