One of the organisers of today's @UKStopTrump Campaign in Central London is @chilledasad100, the Executive Director of @WarOnWant. Here he is this morning tweeting about the launch of the Baby Blimp
I became aware of @chilledasad100's involvement in the anti-Trump campaign when I debated him about Trump's visit on @GMB on April 29th
I was surprised that the head of a UK charity was helping to organise something so overtly political, given the @ChtyCommission's guidance which states that charities shouldn't campaign against a government, administration, individual politician or a political party.
It's not as if @WarOnWant makes an effort to keep @chilledasad100's role in the @UKStopTrump campaign separate from his role as head of @WarOnWant. On the contrary, @WarOnWant quoted @chilledasad100 objecting to Trump's visit on 25th April
I wrote about this apparent breach of the @ChtyCommission's guidance in a column for the @Spectator on 4th May and asked why the @ChtyCommission hadn't criticised @WarOnWant, given its criticism of the @iealondon and @LegatumInst for being too political spectator.co.uk/2019/05/charit…
One reason UK charities are supposed to abstain from partisan political campaigning is because many of them receive large sums of public money. For instance, @WarOnWant is in receipt of Lottery Funding. It also received £400,000 from the BBC's Comic Relief in the past two years.
Is that appropriate, given that @chilledasad100 composes tweets like this one, chastising Tony Blair for being an "embarrassing old white man"?
Or this one, criticising the "white privilege" of the #ExtinctionRebellion protestors?
Or Neo-Marxist, anti-capitalist claptrap like this?
Yesterday, the @ChtyCommission contacted me to say it has now made it clear to @WarOnWant that by appearing to support the @StopTrumpUK campaign, and through the public activities of @chilledasad100, the charity has been engaging in "inappropriate political activity".
I was told that, following the @ChtyCommission's intervention, @WarOnWant has now removed some of the inappropriate materials from is website (although not all, evidently) and will in future make it clear that it is no longer associated with @StopTrumpUK.
To clarify, I am not challenging the right of @chilledasad100 and other far Left activists to protest the visit of Trump (although I'm mystified as to why they don't organise protests against state visits from the heads of much more illiberal regimes).
But for a UK charity to get involved in such an overtly political, partisan cause is inappropriate, given the special place charities occupy in the hearts of the British public and the donations they attract from people with a wide range of political views.
