What I mean is that theological arguments are all about asserting authority based on ultimately unfalsifiable views, however couched such views may be in technical language. There's no (accessible) external arbiter, just as there's no accessible set of instructions for Calvinball
This is why I will always contend that ethics > morality. Good theology, good religion, matches up with good ethics, and I'm not here to tell people they can't choose to keep religion if it's meaningful to them. But I feel much safer sticking with secular ethics. #EmptyThePews
In theology, there are certainly "good guys" and "bad guys," but there's never a final victory, only struggle and disputes about the rules. I appreciate the "good guys" but don't want to play a game with no winners, and, for those who fall afoul of the "bad guys," so many losers.
In short, theology is a language game no one ever truly wins that has deadly serious real-world stakes. It's also a game we can choose to opt out of, and that's my choice.
This line of thinking informs my objection to calling Trumpist Christians "CINOs" or "fake." Empirically that's far from the case. And white evangelicals who attend church regularly are in fact more likely to support Trump
