Lawmakers to grill Trump Administration officials on white supremacy threat - ABC News - via @ABC
Color me unimpressed. FBI can't talk about ongoing investigations and we already known that prosecution numbers are up.
You have to wonder if hearings like this and the recent news that the House Judiciary Committee is going to take on Google, Facebook, and the entire tech industry, are just ways to deflect from the impeachment question.
If lawmakers really want to improve the white supremacy terrorism situation, they can pass a fricken' domestic terrorism law.
If you want to watch:
The comments are about what you would expect on YouTube.
Ms. Neuman just brought up the mass shooting in Virginia Beach as something that must be prevented. The shooter was black. This is a hearing on white supremacy domestic terrorism.
The FBI guy just warned the Chairman that he shouldn't be getting info about the FBI from someone who left the Bureau 15 years ago, before the internet was just a prominent player in radicalization. This is a key point. There's at least one such expert spreading weird tales.
Ms. Maloney is blaming the FBI for not having thorough hate crimes statistics. It's not mandatory for local police departments to report such crimes. The FBI can't force them to comply.
"Terrorism" stats are even more useless. Some states have DT laws, other don't. And since there's no federal domestic terrorism law on the books, then the crime doesn't get counted in such stats.
Mr. Clay is now talked about the "black identity extremist" label.

This is a hearing on white supremacy domestic terrorism.
There's a widespread belief that the FBI is spending time, money, resources on black domestic terrorism crimes that would otherwise go to white supremacy terrorism crimes.
Ms. Wasserman Schultz asks DHS about the departmental shifts designed to combat domestic terrorism, including grants, CVE efforts, and so on. I hope someone writes up a detailed explainer on this topic.
Ms. Ocasio Cortez wants to know why the Tree of Life and AME Church shootings aren't considered DT by the FBI.

FBI: they were.

AOC: Then why weren't they charged.

FBI: There's no law.

AOC: The Orlando bar shooting and San Bernadino shooting were charged with DT.
FBI: they were done on behalf of foreign groups.

AOC: So you only charge Muslims?

FBI: No.

AOC: Isn't white supremacy global?

FBI: Yes, but they Tree of Life and AME shooters weren't reporting to foreign white supremacy groups.
She never quite draws the line that it's Congress' fault that there's no domestic terrorism law on the books.
Someone earlier in the hearing provided definitions of domestic terrorism, international terrorism, and home grown extremism. These should be printed up and given to the politicians in the room.
Mr. Roy gets the distinction.
There's a lot of ficus on the need for more data. Not a lot of talk about internet's role.
Ms. Pressley wants to talk about the "Black Identity Extremist" label from a 2016 report. She is angry that the label exists.

See post above about the belief that the existence of a label on a report has any meaning whatsoever to how and what the FBI do.
She wants the FBI to say that Black Lives Matter isn't responsible for any killings.

Black Lives Matter never appeared in the Black Identity Extremist report.
The FBI says there is no surveillance or activity on the Black Identity Extremist category.
As mentioned earlier in this thread, there's a former FBI agent pushing bad info.
