I don't know who needs to hear this, but I don't follow back. I follow people I want to keep in touch with or whose content I want to keep up with. Some of them I found because they followed me first.

Follow me to see my content regularly. Not in hopes of a social connection.
Ever since around when I broke 20,000 followers I had to filter my notifications just to keep my phone from crashing with them. I don't know when someone follows me, if I wasn't already previously following them. I don't see it happen.
I got a really passive-aggressive reply from someone today telling me they were unfollowing me because I hadn't followed back. That's not an agreement I ever made. I know that's how some people do Twitter, but it's not some standard we all agreed to.
Following, muting, and blocking are all tools you have available to you to help customize your experience on this site. They can do other things, but at a base level, that's what they do.
Follow people whose content you want to see.
I don't need to know if you're unfollowing me. You don't need my permission or my blessing or for me to sign your exit papers, and I'm not going to offer a special deal to try to retain you.

Follow if you want my content. Unfollow if it turns out that no, actually, you don't.
I think the maddest anyone ever got at me online was when someone told me they weren't going to read my stories if I didn't make a few changes and I said, "Okay, that's fine. I'm not writing for everybody. I hope you find something more to your taste."
Anyway. I'm me. I tweet what I'm thinking, about the things I'm thinking about. It's up to you if that's worth reading. You don't have to tell me your answer or involve me in your decision-making process. It's 100% up to you.
