We’ve just cycled for 40 minutes around our neighbourhood on our new tandem.

I’ve come home & burst into tears because I loved it so much.

As a visually impaired person I’ve always felt so excluded from sport & exercise. Now I’ve finally found something I can do. A silver tandem bike on a lawn in garden. Behind it a rose bush & shrubs. The bike has water bottles attached to the frame, a small bag on a pannier, a larger padded seat at the back with upright handles, & a racing seat at the front.
I didn’t realise the impact of having the right bike & modifications. On the other rental tandems we tried I was struggling to manage more than 10 minutes at a time because of the seat & frame size. I just thought I was too unfit! But this was easy & comfortable.
We even did a brief ride on a main road with a cycle lane!

Other Half has put so much effort into finding the right bike on eBay, ordering the right seat & handlebars for me, & getting it just right.

We’re off to Richmond Park tomorrow & I can’t wait to get back in the saddle.
If you’re an enthusiastic cyclist then why not volunteer as a tandem front rider or support adaptive cycling sessions? Lots of disabled people would love to access cycling.

I put together the list below a while ago, check it out & find a scheme near you
