(1/12) THREAD 👇Contrary to popular belief, George Washington's dentures were not wooden. At his inauguration in 1789, he only had one tooth. John Greenwood—a dentist from New York—fashioned a set of dentures from ivory, and a mixture of cow & human teeth. [From @NYAMhistory]
(2/12) Unsurprisingly, tooth loss was a common problem in the 18th century. Toothbrushes made of coarse horse hair often did more harm than good. This example belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte, and is now housed at @ExploreWellcome.
(3/12) The wealthy might choose to have a “live” tooth implanted. The recipient had the rotten tooth removed before a selection of donors, who would then have their own healthy teeth extracted until the right size was found. Afterwards, it was affixed using a silver wire.

(1/3) SHORT THREAD in honor of Thomas Hardy's Birthday (2 June 1840) 👇In the churchyard of St. Pancras Old Church in London, hundreds of old gravestones circle an ash tree. Today, this tree is known as the “Hardy Tree,” named after the famous English novelist & poet.
(2/3) During the 1860s, the Midland Railway Line decided to expand over part of the original churchyard. The architect Arthur Blomfield was commissioned to supervise the exhumation & dismantling of tombs. He passed this unenviable task to his protegé, Thomas Hardy.
(3/3) Hardy oversaw the removal of bodies from the land on which the railway was being built. Some of the headstones were placed in a circular pattern around this young ash tree. Over the decades, headstones nearest the trunk disappeared into its growth. Photo: Adrian Snood.

#8 of 10 FASCINATING MUMMIES: The “Fire Mummies" of the Philippines, c.1200 AD. The mummification began before death when the dying person would drink a beverage with a very high concentration of salt to dehydrate the body. After death, the corpse was slowly smoked for months.

Here's a thread for @JohanGaltung and other non-VZ friends that have asked me to share some thoughts regarding #Venezuela. Bear with me. Impossible to reflect on so much complexity in three or four tweets.
The situation in VZ is beyond desperate. As a VZ abroad having to deal with over simplified versions of what is going on, I feel disheartened to see such a blatant refusal to listen to the people they say they’re defending. There are many important things they’re ignoring:
Human Rights org @_Provea has reported 54 deaths in protests *just* in 2019. 53 of them died from gunshots. 80% of deaths fall under responsibility of the police, the military and pro government armed groups. The number soars horribly when checking protests in 2017 and 2014.

In 1938 the US denied over 100,000 visas of German Jews trying to flee. The US government feared that these desperate families might be spies, saboteurs, or disease ridden. They would beg on the street, be a drain on the economy or commit acts of terror (sound familiar?) 2/5
The MS St. Louis carried 900 Jewish refugees but could not find a safe harbour and returned to Europe with 600 of them, all eventually went to concentration camps, most died in the war. Cuba, Canada, the US, and the UK only allowed entry to refugees with preexisting visas. 3/5

@jessesingal has disputed my interpretation of Gay's stance on the relationship between western feminism & Islamic misogyny,
Reading back through the audio transcript he provided as evidence, I stand by my original statements. If anything, my portrayal was too generous.
To me, Gay's quoted response is a weak deflection that allows her to avoid addressing oppressive Islamic norms directly. Although it may appear to harmlessly advocate for cautionary intervention, it's riddled with cultural relativism that hides behind woke activist buzzwords.
The boundaries she defines for intersectional activism by saying " I don't think we know better than what those communities need for themselves" are based on a commonly perceived moral obligation to protect other cultures from white ignorance & imperialist tendencies.

This one is obviously a real mess and deserves some more background so let me share what I know:
