2+ years in the making, "Automating the News: How Algorithms are Rewriting the Media" is finally available for sale TODAY: https://t.co/UFw5aOlRsbbuff.ly/2WtAPHg
Chapter 1 talks about the idea of hybrid journalism: combining algorithms, AI, automation and journalists into effective and efficient news production workflows.
In chapter 2 I delve into data mining (inc. machine learning) for *editorial purposes*. Whether finding stories in big data, helping to verify content and sources, or making it faster to curate discussions, I show how data mining can increase the scope and quality of journalism.
Algorithms for automatically generating content are now used in domains ranging from finance and sports to real-estate and politics. Chapter 3 digs into the opportunities for speed, scale, and personalization afforded, while also considering limitations of data and quality.
Newsbots—the social face of news automation—are the subject of chapter 4. They’re increasingly shaping the ways news information is delivered, gathered, and monitored in creative ways.
In chapter 5 I turn to the use of algorithms in news distribution. I introduce the idea of the “journalistic newsfeed” — what would a Facebook newsfeed (or other algorithmic curator) look like if it were built from the ground up with journalistic and editorial values?
And in chapter 6 I consider how the proliferation of algorithmic decision-making systems in many facets of society is impacting journalism practice. I talk about new methods and approaches that journalists can use to scrutinize bias, power, and influence on the “algorithms beat”.
