Thoroughly disappointed in the @StaceyDooley event at #SheffDocFest tonight. An acknowledgment with humility should have been coming out of her mouth when the question was raised about @DavidLammy’s #WhiteSaviour tweet. @sheffdocfest
Instead what we were shown was a lack of understanding & complete defiance on her part with her words “I could care less about what people think” uttered several times. A massive round of applause should have been given to the man at the back who quite rightly called her out.
I myself ended up in a conversation straight after with a white man who I was sitting next too (who happened to be part of the #BBC team. He proceeded to tell me that I was angry & defensive. I of course said no you are portraying me as that as I am a Black woman.
This is of course the narrative us Black women get from white people when we express emotion. At this point, there was a small crowd of white people & two women in particular looking at me as though I was dirt.
I ended up walking off & he called after me “you are shitting on your own argument.” This has wholly ruined my experience of @sheffdocfest. So much so that I didn’t go back for @theslumflower’s talk.
Also there was about 5 people of colour in that event which just shows the lack of diversity at these types of events. It’s not right that we as Black people have to go through this kinda crap with our lived experiences not being taken into account. And being made to feel shit.
I am upset, disappointed and very deflated.
