Literally everyone thinks political correctness has gone too far, right up until they figure out the gag.

"Political correctness" is just a label to slap on whatever social niceties and considerations you don't care about. It's too far for you, by definition.
Actual political correctness would be the viewpoints most likely to be accepted by the masses/your base. When Bill Maher decries "political correctness", he is being politically correct. He knows this viewpoint is the safe, sure way to secure his position. It signals his virtues.
Right-wing politicians who have relied on abortion to get out of unwanted parenthood espouse "pro-life" viewpoints because it is politically correct to do so. Standing for the national anthem? Political correctness. Not criticizing the executive while he's overseas? PC run wild.
That's actual political correctness. The kind of PC that Maher is talking about is just shorthand for saying "other people care about this and I don't, so why should it affect me?"
But notice it's one-sided. It is always the viewpoint further to the left on any axis or cause that is seen as "PC". We are all tacitly supposed to think anyone more progressive than us in any way is a dangerous radical or illiberal scold, but anyone more conservative has a point
There is more than one reason for this but a big one is decades of leading voices left of the aisle urging us to try to understand one another while the leading voices on the right insist everybody to the left of them is a bomb-throwing communist anarchist authoritarian.
But even as the right has been *incredibly* successful at generalizing everyone to their left as exactly as radical as one another, the populace at large *still* by and large expects better from Democrats and the left of center than they would ever dream of seeking from the right
No one asks the right to compromise, no one expects them to show consistency, nobody looks to them for bipartisanship. No one expects them to make the first move and no one blames them for not reciprocating.

Rules are for Democrats. It's okay if you're a Republican.
We can't stop them from doing it. We can destroy the framing they use, though. Reject the notion of "political correctness" entirely. Stop acting like people having differing needs and different ideas of respect is a war in which there are two sides and only one can survive.
Everyone who believes in "political correctness" as Maher uses it thinks it goes too far.

Because that's what the label means.

Reject the label.

Smash the frame.

Break the wheel.
