I volunteered weekly dow at Grond Zero in the kitchen at Bouley Bakery. Worked all through Saturday night then after dawn would serve breakfast to firefighters in a tiny makeshift area. I still struggle remembering how much pain I saw in the eyes of the firefighters.
They were searching through rubble, still hoping to find their brothers. The days they got away from the pile were spent at funerals. I remember chewing gum was the most coveted donated item because when you spent that much time down there, the air made your mouth taste awful.
Taking care of these men and women, and their families should be a no brainer. But then again, so should the way we care for our veterans. The litmus test for patriotism shouldn't be who can yell louder at the "other" supposedly coming to get us.
I'm looking extra hard at "America's Mayor" @RudyGiuliani who gleefully carries water for this hateful administration and a GOP bent on blocking anything remotely reasonable for passing. Putting this here to remind him and you of this betrayal nbc.com/saturday-night…
The fire burned for 100 days. 10,000 first responders had been diagnosed with cancer, and over 2,000 deaths had been attributed to illnesses caused by the attacks. I look at this video and wonder how many of those men are still with us, how many are living with illness. Shameful
