THREAD. By the age of 14 I had witnessed both parents have nervous breakdowns. I imagine nowadays neither of them would've been granted custody of a child but I was born in the fun 80s. This thread is about my Dad's breakdown. #Thread #threadstorytime
It was 1992 and my Dad, my stepmother and myself were sitting down on a Saturday evening watching Blind Date. I should probably mention that my stepmother, a few years previously, was also my Dad's stepmother... more on that next.
In the late 80s I went to my Auntie's house and told her that I'd heard my Dad and my then Step-Grandmother plotting a way to kill off my Granda. It was laughed off as a crazy childhood imagination.. Two years later my Granda was dead and my Dad had married his wife.
Back to Blind Date. The lucky couple from the previous episode were enjoying a nice holiday somewhere exotic. They got to witness turtles hatching from their eggs then cutely flapping on into the ocean. My Dad then said "I've never even seen a kitten hatching"
My stepmother and I didn't say anything at first. We were both hesitant of my Dad. He had quite a temper (something which I had to hear him taking out on his dog quite often) My stepmother finally broke the silence and said "Terry, cat's don't lay eggs"
He looked at her completely flummoxed before accusing her of having no intelligence. She calmly tried to reason with him that cats indeed don't lay eggs but give birth directly to their young. His reply "Oh, so cats give birth like people do? Do be so fucking stupid, Yvonne"
At this point I felt I had to say something. I too informed him of the actually reproduction method of felines. He replied "I can't fucking believe you're siding with her.. You don't even like her" He was correct, but to be fair I didn't like either of them.
My Dad then went into a tirade of shouting, swearing etc before moving on to crying and then into shaking and mumbling uncontrollably. My step mother and I spent hours trying to calm him down and bring him 'back around' Eventually we settled him down.
After he'd calmed, he told us he didn't want to ever talk about it again and that we both had severely disappointed him. I have no relationship with my father today... I'm also allergic to cats.
