(1/6) FACIAL RECONSTRUCTION, a short THREAD! 👇 Here's the severed head of Sir Simon Sudbury, hacked off during the Peasants’ Revolt in 1381. The Peasants' Revolt had various causes, including the socio-economic and political tensions generated by the Black Death.
(2/6) Sudbury was Archbishop of Canterbury & Lord Chancellor of England when he died. In 1381, a group of insurgent peasants attacked & damaged the Archbishop's property; then, rushing into the Tower of London (where had taken up residence), they seized the Archbishop himself.
(3/6) So unpopular was Sudbury due to his introduction of certain taxes that guards simply allowed the rebels through the gates. He was dragged to Tower Hill where he was beheaded after eight blows to his neck.
(4/6) His body was buried in Canterbury Cathedral, though his head (after being taken down from London Bridge) was placed in the Church of St Gregory at Sudbury in Suffolk, which Sudbury had partly rebuilt. It is still on display today.
(5/6) The skull recently underwent a CT scan, which 24-year-old Adrienne Barker then used to reconstruct what Sudbury may have looked like in life as part of her degree in Forensic Art.
(6/6) Three copies were made of the head. One is now on permanent display at St Gregory’s Church, Sudbury, and another was presented to Canterbury City Council.
