In the last couple of weeks, I’ve had a number of conversations about the Democratic race with people of my own demographic—straight, middle-aged, middle-class, liberal white guys. Here are my thoughts.
1/ One guy REALLY loved Joe Biden, and looked at me like I was nuts for calling him Handsy McGee. Others don’t love Joe but see him as necessary. “We need Biden on the ticket to assuage the concerns of the Middle American swing voter who went for Trump last time,” or somesuch.
2/ I don’t know that any demo has ever been as catered to, or as pandered to, as this possibly apocryphal group: Red State, white male, blue collar (ie, Red, White & Blue), voted for Trump because he hates Hillary, wants Trump gone but is unlikely to ever vote for a woman.
3/ I understand this concern. We’ve never had a woman president—shamefully, one of the last countries in the world to not do so—and the only minority president was Obama, who is a unicorn.

Biden, like Warren Harding before him, “looks like a president.”
4/ But here’s the thing: the GOP doesn’t bend over backwards catering to, say, African-Americans. To the contrary, they nominated an overt racist. GOP plays to its base. Why should we ALSO play to the GOP’s base?
5/ The base of the Democratic party is women and people of color, African-Americans in particular. The base of the Democratic party significantly outnumbers the GOP base, especially now, post-Trump. So it stands to reason that by catering to OUR OWN base, we will win.
6/ The worst move we can make, strategically, is to nominate an old white guy with a shaky record on women’s issues, who lacks original policy ideas, and who coasts along based on name recognition and proximity to Obama.
7/ The second-worst move we can make is to pick a young, inexperienced white guy because he speaks Norwegian or almost beat Ted Cruz in Texas. Pete’s closeness to Zuckerberg disqualifies him. Beto should be running for the Senate again, where we need him, not for president.
8/ I like a lot of our candidates, Gillibrand in particular. But this is a two-(wo)man race between Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren. The sooner we coalesce around them, and reject Biden and Bernie and Beto and Buttigieg, the better.
McDonald’s doesn’t market to vegans. We need to forget about the “Red, White & Blue” voter and fire up the base. 2020 could be a historic, landslide victory…if we don’t screw it up.
